I think this Twitter dude’s wrong (shocking, I know), and he’s just speculating (incorrectly).

[Edit: Nope. He’s right. Frozen pick doesn’t come into effect until next season]

Guess who’s over the 2nd apron.

https://theathletic.com/5021179/2023/11/03/nba-cba-second-apron-clippers-warriors-celtics-bucks/

The most significant of those is the “frozen pick,” which first prevents teams that finish a season over that second apron from trading their first-round pick seven years out and can actually move that selection to the end of the round if they stay over the second apron for at least two of the following four seasons. (Note: Teams can “unfreeze” their pick by staying under the second apron for a few years, but that process takes a while and the pick remains untradeable unless and until it is unfrozen.)

dude's gonna be 35 next season, has been playing 60 games a year since he left the bulls, and has 2 years/100 mil left. this is simply not big news. so the question is who's desperate enough to trade for him

Obviously the Heat are very much our competition having eliminated us from the postseason 2 years in a row...they are a massive lux tax paying team. Not only are they paying lux tax, they are past the 1st apron and at the 2nd apron. $190M to compete as a play-in team.

The same Heat that has multiple finals appearances in recent history?

Also the spending situation/rationale isn't so black and white. One element is these teams you're trying to compare to have a notion of past success and the players you would typically build/contend with (past MVPs and finals MVPs etc), while we don't. Another is they also have developed their own talent and then used bird rights to then exceed the cap etc.

Us straight out spending in free agency ... we're hamstrung with what we can do with the CBA and the likelihood of a MLE signing being the difference maker that would guarantee our success? Slim.

Dan Z wrote:As for spending I agree with you that'd I like an owner willing to do that, but spending isn't the biggest issue right now.
Bingo.

DASMACKDOWN wrote:No other team has to prove themselves first before the owners are willing to even tip toe in the tax.

I sense the notion was more aimed at we're probably the only top 5 franchise that has to prove themselves in order to justify the tax, because I'd argue that almost apart from a minority, most teams do/would need to.

There's also no denying that we've also been extra cheap when we have met said criteria too.

paying the tax for an unproven team is stupid given the non-financial penalties attached. cuban let brunson walk because he didn't want the tax

incredibly, it won't take much more. melo was only there 6+ years, won 7 total playoff games, wasn't particularly good the last 3 seasons, and might be a top 5 knick of all time

I really hope for the Suns sake he is wrong.

When the sun sets, it drops in a hurry. Every remaining playoff team is led by a player under the age of 30, unless you call Rudy Gobert the leader of Minnesota, rather than Ant. But I don't think you should.

Just had the depressing realisation that the Magic are 1 game away from Round 2 of the playoffs and we are Play in darlings.

Hey, the Bulls are 2-0 in the first round of play-in games, the Magic can't say the same.

I added an edit to my post.

Frozen pick doesn’t come into effect until next season, so the guy is right.

So sorry to any Suns fans out there.

So after gunning the ball twice at close range into the stands trying to intentionally hurt fans is Pat Bev’s dumb ass finally out of the NBA for good?

This season was quite the shake up. Can’t forget that Houston is a young rising squad. Probably going to be aggressive.

The list of unexpected (or half-expected) 1st rd and play-in losers is steep. Atleast 14 of those teams were hoping for a decent playoff run (inc. Bulls, Nets, Hawks - however naive). Atleast they weren’t designed to tank. And I don’t think most people had Indy, Orlando, NYK, OKC climbing as much as they did.

Then on top of this, many of these young unexpected winners have multiple FRPs. So what you’ll have is atleast 15 all stars or more available than ever for trade/FA/S&T talks (inc. Curry, Dray, Lebron, Davis, Jimmy, Kawhi, Harden, George, Zion, Ingram, Durant, Booker, Trae, Dejoute, Lillard, Mitchell pending)… and a handful of very good teams who could put together the mass of firsts/prospects to easily scoop them up (okc, utah, indiana, nyk, orlando). Of course Curry, Lebron, Durant, Dame probably stand pat… but these teams have to be discussing plans.

So I think this will be the summer with the most trades in recent memory. Arturas doesn’t have much to work with, but if he wanted a buy-low, big splash summer, this would’ve been the one. Unfortunately for him, Demar and Zach are gonna be very last on that list. Unfortunately for us, we may see some 27-29 future picks mortgaged for some 35yo.

Bev got a big head thinking he's this great player who turns teams around when really he's a role player who ends up in decent situations. His ego got him in trouble.

It is exactly what I expect to happen. Possibly Ayo and/or Coby as well. Time for the quadruple down.

I believe our only hope as a franchise this summer is that DDR just leaves. That could be the catalyst.

He just needs to go away so the adults don’t have to deal with him anymore.

"You don't have to run plays for them" - Kidd on the virtues of Daniel Gafford (and PJ Washington).

Yep, that's my kind of center, unless his name is Nikola or Joel. We need to go back to having a center like that. A WCJ/Gafford combo would do just fine.
