When that report came out that the Cubs balked at the 500 million dollar price tag, I was pissed.

I came into the offseason with the mindset that the bidding would start at 10/500. I would have gone as high as 10/575 and anything over 600M would have been the insanity zone. 10/700?? That’s insanity no matter how you chop it. Glad it wasn’t us.

Dodgers must be printing money over there. They've become the new Yankees- any big name that's out there seems to have a 50/50 chance of winding up in LA.

I just hope the Cubs sign Belli. And then they need to spend to add a few more pieces around him. They have to replace Stroman, and they need another couple of bats. Still a lot of work to be done, and I hope Jed has a plan. There is no reason Chicago teams should not be able to compete with teams like the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers when it comes to signing big name players, and be in the mix every year for a playoff spot.

So this got me thinking about his Agent’s cut. Does that get deferred too? Union dues are apparently $16k per player annually.

pretty good moves on the margins so far. the Bummer trade was very good, Fedde just won the triple crown in Korea. Acquired Stassi for free, rumored to be signing two very talented international prospects (though 17-years-old). exactly the sort of things a rebuilding team should be doing. I can't complain too much about Getz so far, the team might actually be better than it was last year, prioritizing defense at key positions. His front office hires look good too, Bannister has revamped a lot of pitchers' careers and now they're hiring kinesiologists to work in player development.
Admittedly, small moves, his first real test will be what we can get in return for Cease. I hope he trades with STL and we get Masyn Winn and Tink Hence. Winn looks like a future gold glover at SS and hit the ball really well in AAA, .837 OPS and 18 homers.

this will spark a change to the CBA. unreal. it's a clear manipulation of the luxury tax. it feels like regular ol tax evasion too, Ohtani can collect on that money in Texas or somewhere else with lower state taxes than California.

They've been getting ready for this offseason for the past 3 years. Letting go of star players, signing players to one year deal. They went scorched earth this free agency and they're not even done yet.

Cubs had a great offseason last winter and dodged big bullets at SS and got Dansby.

Hoping our signings have big impact. I think Belli will resign for 1B and C. Think next year will be vets and the youngsters with a big trade in season. Also think Morel will be at 3B.

I thought the cubs would be in on him and probably could’ve put together a better off than the cubs did. Though, the dodgers re-signed him to a giant deal that it’s dubious he will fulfill considering his injury concerns. Dodgers of course can blow $115mil on a guy who may or may not perform…but glasnow is very good if he actually plays.

Sort of weird how inactive the cubs have been this offseason. They have clear holes to fill and the trade/free agent market is beginning to evaporate. Re-signing Belli would be a mistake I think inlets it has a team option. he’s primed to get a giant contract somewhere, but his underlying batting profile doesn’t project well. Doesn’t hit the ball hard, he might just be a slap hitting defensive specialist alternating between CF and 1b, probably not a guy you want to give a 8+ year contract to. I really root for him too, we attended the same high school! I wish the Sox had signed him last year instead of Benintendi.

deferred comp has been going on for a long time. and it will count against their tax eventually

income taxes are based on where the work was performed, not where a person resides when they collect

wonder what the dollar amount would convert to if paid on usual timetable. given that we're coming out of a period of high inflation it's a curious choice by ohtani

Athletes' salaries are completely out of control. There's hardly a better analogy for the massive income inequality and growing gap between 'us' and 'them' than professional sports.
