Chicago Sky/WNBA thread 2024

The Sky made their final roster cut, waiving Brynna Maxwell, the 13th pick in the 2024 draft. Sounds very crazy but isn't that uncommon in the W. Expansion is desperately needed and coming soon!

With that being said, the WNBA season starts tomorrow. Discuss!

Yep, not very many slots! If every WNBA player had a 12-year career, and draft picks were made entirely according to future ability, then no player drafted after the 12th position would ever make the league. Of course, it doesn't work that way, but that does show how tough the odds are for later picks.

Plus, Maxwell had bad luck in that she was the 13th overall pick, but the third selection in this class for the Sky. It's pretty tough for 3 rookies to crack a 12-person roster.

Think its safe to say the Fever game tomorrow is going to break WNBA viewership records.

The FULL COURT PRESS series has been good. Its follows all the main hitters from the 2024 womens college basketball tournament.

Caitlin Curry effect. My two nieces are excited about WNBA this season. Hopefully, popularity keeps rising. Chicago Sky should have a good team for next couple of seasons

They're cursed too. Already starting the season without their top pick for over a month

Stinks to be a first round pick and can't make it out of camp just due to numbers game. When you go to the WNBA, you better be ready as a prospect because there is no slots for development. I thought Maxwell would break camp though.

If Maxwell can think at all on the court, there would appear to be room for her on the Indiana Fever. Just wow. The Sun played intelligently last night, but the Fever's collective BBIQ was embarrassingly low. Time and time again one of their players would get trapped, her 4 teammates would stand 20 feet away from her, just waiting for I don't know what, and the panicked Indy player would randomly fling the ball in the air.

I realize that there is almost no training camp/pre-season for the WNBA, but they're going to need to improve the product to sustain the viewership that they seek. That was awful.

All that said, I would pay to watch the Sun play a good opponent. That would be worth watching.

She is turnover prone to start with, hasn't yet adjusted to the speed and aggressiveness of the defenses, which punish her for lazy passes and dribbling into traffic, and (as I wrote) her team is absolutely useless when pressed. Nobody shows for the ball. In those conditions, she did better than her teammates, who just lobbed the ball randomly in the air, but she still got victimized. Looked like a rook.

I was talking to one of my friends who suggested going to a WNBA game this year, and it is the first time someone ever suggested that to me. It's interesting because the interest is there now for a lot of teams with carry over.

If they played at Sears Center or All-State Arena (or whatever those places are called now because I think they both changed names), I'd probably be down to go to a few games, but WinTrust arena is just brutal to get to from the suburbs. I have some interest in seeing a game, but not enough to deal with a 90 minute drive there and back.

I will catch a Liberty game or two. I wanted to go this Saturday when the Fever are in town, but that game is $150 per ticket for the worst seats in the house, and $300 for tickets that would cost $150 for a regular-season Bulls game.

So, nah.

Damn, that's awesome to hear though. Chicago desperately needs another basketball team.

WNBA, where you get drafted, and play real games 10 minutes after the draft. I never knew this happened. And then it dawned on me that this is how sports should be.

The wait between NFL Draft and actually playing is crazy.

But WNBA seems a bit too fast. Very brief/non-existent training for the teams before they're out there playing meaningful games.

NBA is almost the same as football. 4 months. Football about 4.5 months

I watched the Liberty local broadcast last night and its announcers (both women whom I had not heard of) were terrific. Knowledgeable, articulate, and fair-minded. Plus, the team is excellent -- both talented and cohesive. I'm going to start watching those games.
