I think as the season goes on, and the team gets more and more used to Rose, his assist numbers will steadily increase. Since game 5, his Assists Per Game have been steadily climbing. I hope Derrick can end the season at:

18 PPG, 8 APG, and 4 RPG. Things can only get better.

i will set the bar for 1,7% at 18 and 10. it's a pretty high bar of course, but we all know how high 1,7% can jump. i still believe that if le black can get our offense clicking (goodness knows when), 1,7%'s assists average can rise significantly.

i'm of the belief that gordon, tyrus, and deng (please don't shoot me now), once accustomed of playing with 1,7% might well help 1,7% get his first 15-assist game, or, on a blue moon, a 20-assist game even. hell if chris duhon can do it so ....

anyway if my derrick rose nickname is a little bit of a nuissance i beg all of you forgiveness and i'll swear i'll never do it again.

I don't think you people realize how hard it will be for Rose to raise his assist averages. Assuming he plays every game at full capacity here is how well he has to play to raise his assists:

Currently: 104 assists over 18 games is 5.8 a game (would be sixteenth in the league now)
To get to 7 assists a game: 7.4 assists a game (would be eight in the league now)
To get to 8 assists a game: 8.6 assists a game (would be third in the league now)
To get to 9 assists a game: 9.9 assists a game (would be second in the league now)
To get to 10 assists a game: 11.2 assists a game (would be second in the league)

Sorry, he isn't a high assist getter for three reasons:
1. Asked to score to many times
2. No "cheap assists" from having a superstar player get assists for him
3. Ball not in his hands all the time

I worked late last night, and couldn't get to the stats. Jeez, you guys are demanding.

It's been updated today.

Oh, and I think Derrick can easily average 7.4 Assists per game from here on out.

It's a good trend that Rose has back to back 10 and 9 dimes. Hope it continues. Too bad both were losses

Updated.

The 5 Game Trends chart has been updated. Derrick seems to be increasing his Assists in the last couple games. His rebounding has been trending consistently down, though.

Instead of just getting one number for each 5 game set, you should try to get a moving average, ie:

data point 1 corresponds to games 1-5
data point 2 corresponds to games 2-6
3 corresponds to 3-7

etc.

This would give a better indication of trends.

Good call. I just updated with a moving average, but it's a little different than yours.

Data point 1 - Game 1
Data point 2 - Game 1/2
Data point 3 - Games 1-3
Data Point 4 - Games 1-4
Data Point 5 - Games 1-5

then after this, I start the movement.

Data Point 6 - Games 2-6
Data Point 7 - Games 3-7

Thanks for the suggestion. We can definitely see some good trends with that.

Derrick is averaging 7 APG over his last five games. Most likely not a coincidence since in the last five, Deng has shot 53.4% from the field.

I realistically see Derrick averaging 7.5+ APG with the Bulls players getting better with the system.

Just did a quick look at the stats their rookie seasons and Rose's numbers look better than Williams, Marbury, Paker and Wade's and compare very favorable with Paul's.

Derrick won't be able to match CP3's rookie season. Paul had a staggering PER of 22 as a rookie (the best since Duncan) whereas Derrick is at 17.5 right now. Paul averaged almost two assists more per game and was just as efficient as Derrick despite the lower FG% because he got to the line twice as often. Also, as a rookie CP3 was already netting a ton of steals, whereas Derrick is pretty average in that regard.

None of this is a bad thing though. Derrick is about six months younger than Paul was as a rookie, so he's still really young. Also, I'm of the opinion that Paul is on pace to be a top 15 player of all time, meaning that we shouldn't sweat it if Derrick can't play at quite the same level.

He's 5th in the NBA in another stat, though its a made up one..

http://basketball.realgm.com/src_fromtherafters/222/20081205/hands_on_buckets_who_is_carrying_the_most_weight_offensively/
Hands On Buckets: Who Is Carrying The Most Weight Offensively?

During the 2007 baseball season, I created a little stat called Hands On Runs or HOR, which is a simple to understand statistic that is indicative of how much weight a player carries within the framework of his offense.

There are two hands involved with every run scored; one from the runner scoring and one from the batter who drives in the run.

In order to calculate the percentage of runs a player has a hand in, I add the run total with the RBI total, then divide by the amount of runs their team has scored, and finally divide by two in order to get a percentage.

I have transferred the concept of the statistic over to basketball for what is called Hands On Buckets, or HOB. With this stat, we add the field goal total of a player to his assist total and then divide by the overall number of field goals a team has made in order to get a percentage of buckets a player helped make over the course of a season.

John Stockton's 90-91 season in which he made 496 field goals and dished 1,164 assists giving him a 51.6 HOB%, is the best such season in NBA history. This is better than Michael Jordan's 88-89 when he had a 46.9 HOB%, or Oscar Robertson's 48.6 HOB%, even Wilt Chamberlain's 63-64 in which he had a 47.2 HOB%.

2008-09 Leaders

1. Chris Paul, 53.4%: Paul finished the 07-08 season with a mark of 49.2 HOB%, which was slightly better than LeBron James' 46.0%. Paul is 3rd in offensive rating with 128.2 and is on pace to break Stockton's record, but there is still a lot of season remaining.

2. Dwyane Wade, 48.0%: Wade's usage (35.8) is the highest of his career and though he isn't quite as efficient as a scorer as was in 05-06 or 06-07, he has been far more active as a creator for others.

3. LeBron James, 41.2%: LeBron is on pace to be every bit as all-around effective on the offensive end this season as last year, but he has been only hurt by Cleveland's frequent one-sided games, dropping his minutes per by five minutes. This statistic relies on being on the floor.

4. Baron Davis, 38.2%: Baron is forced to do a whole lot more than he did in Golden State's freeing offense. He is still putting up numbers, but the Clippers have struggled and he isn't nearly as efficient of a scorer as he was with the Warriors.

5. Derrick Rose, 37.5%: Rose is having an excellent rookie season and he's been carrying a much bigger load than the Bulls even expected him to because of the Kirk Hinrich injury. Rose is just 15th in assist percentage, but he is fifth in minutes and eleventh in total field goals.

.. the "your team is riding your coattails by this much" stat. Take it for what you will, its a stat derived from stats (remind you of wall street derivatives?), but it corroborates the eye test in stating that DR is the team right now.

I did not see this if posted before, I promise I'm forum-trained and would not drop trou in a thread intentionally.
