Cap & Lux Tax Figures

Postby Tommy Udo 6 on Tue Jul 07, 2009 9:45 pm

The National Basketball Association today announced that the Salary Cap for the 2009-10 season will be $57.7 million. The tax level for the 2009-10 season has been set at $69.92 million. Any team whose team salary exceeds that figure will pay a $1 tax for each $1 by which it exceeds $69.92 million.

The 2008-09 Salary Cap was $58.68 million and the tax level was $71.15 million. Although league-wide revenue increased 2.5% this past season, the decrease in the Salary Cap and tax level for the 2009-10 season is the result of the formula used to set the Cap and tax under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

The new Salary Cap and tax level go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 8, when the league’s “moratorium period” ends and teams can begin signing free agents and making trades.

The mid-level exception is $5.854 million for the 2009-10 season and the minimum team salary, which is set at 75% of the Salary Cap, is $43.275 million.

Haven't been keeping the numbers in my head, so I'm going to ask: Where does this put the Bulls? I know there's a smartypants out there who has the answers.

Thanks Tommy that luxury tax number of 69.92 is a little higher than I thought it would be. Tell me if this is right, counting Gray and not counting Roberson and Nelson I have us for 12 players at roughly $67.5

Rose,Hinrich
Salmons
Deng,Johnson
Tyrus,Gibson,Tim
Noah,Miller,Gray,James

That leaves us $2 million to use the 13th spot on a solid backup PG/SG who can shoot the 3. In this economic climate that should get us a pretty solid player, no?

Roberson must be waived by Friday or he becomes guaranteed. If he stays, we'll have about $1.2 mil to use on a 14th player!

Has a reason been given as to why Aaron Gray is wasting 1million on the roster?

Thanks formerly bulls6. :)
The Bulls (and Bears) will win most of their home games, and lose most of their road games. Please be advised, and overreact accordingly. :)

He's the prettiest cheerleader we've got, damnit.
On Lakers fans seeing Derrick Rose:
"Rose is already the sexiest man alive," Miller said from a few seats away. "They want to come see his sexiness."

No - and I was not a fan of that qualifying offer. We could use that salary to pay someone who is actually good at playing basketball.

Never mind the players, Bulls M.V.P., the capologist guru who reports to Reinsdorque, I forgot his name. I think he was featured on Scott_May's avatar before Rushmore (this was on another forum). Missed it by that much...we're in the money! We're in the money!

Tommy with that being the case with Roberson shouldn't we just cut Roberson and use $2 million to get a really solid SG on a one year deal. Not sure who but Rodney Carney or Anthony Parker or someone along those lines would be great. I guess if we keep Roberson then you can get Pargo with the $1.2 million but with Pargo on board then Roberson is more useless than he is already. Contrary to others I am more than okay with Gray here for $1 million. The luxury tax number is higher than I expected so I feel good about that. He is a big strong 7 footer and as a 3rd string center is a nice player.
