The Sox are strangely lucky when it comes to this sort of thing. They're not generally very good, but every year it seems someone on the Sox accomplishes some inexplicable individual feat. Phil Humber threw a perfect game? What?

Sox actually have one of the best winning percentages in baseball over the last twenty years. Might not seem that way because they've shriveled at the end of the year every season except 05 and 94, which was a strike shortened year.

Watched the end of the game with my dad at Palermos on the south side, Oak Lawn. Just an awesome moment in Sox history. Always feel pride for the White Sox but even moreso today of course. Congrats to Humber on a magnificent game, and Cooper for getting him to play on this level. Guy is a legend.

Baseball changed its ruling on Perfect games a few years ago - and some games were no longer Perfect.

Another one who lost his Perfecto was Eddie Shore.
Shore didnt start the game, Babe Ruth did.

Ruth walked the first batter & was thrown out for arguing the Ball 4 call.

Shore came in cold. The runner was either picked off or thrown out stealing. Shore then retired all 26 others. Amazing

It is an individual feat for the pitcher(And to lesser extent team).

No walks, no errors, no hits, nobody getting on base in any kind of weird circumstance.

Consider there is like a bajillion miliion fitafillion baseball games played per year and still there have only been 21 perfect games over the very long history of professional baseball.

I'm a Cubs fan, but congrats to him, the team, and all Sox fans. It is a heck of an accomplishment.

They are still awesome but its interesting there have been 5 perfect games since 04 and only 16 the other 128 years of baseball.

So about 25% of perfect games thrown have occured in a period of time that is just 5% of the history of baseball.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this time frame is also the immediate post-steroid era.

Anyways, I am just fortunate to have witnessed during my lifetime the (arguably) two most dominating pitching performances in (regular season) Chicago baseball history in Wood's 20 K game and Humber's perfect game. Buehrle's perfecto was a ton of fun to watch, but he didn't look unhittable like Wood or Humber. I actually think his no-hitter was a better performance in some ways.

I was thinking of the post steroid thing after it happened today but runs and hits are still up during this era bigtime compared to the history of baseball. Pretty random for 5 perfect games in a time period where hitters are still generally better comparitive to baseballs past.

Also random note I forgot I served on Phil Humber at the restaurant I work at this winter, had totally forgot till I saw his post game interview and heard his goofy voice.

While it's true that there have been relatively more perfectos this century, they're still extremely rare. Even the oldest fans of most teams have never seen one of their pitchers throw a perfect game since only 12 teams have had pitchers accomplish the feat. By the way, the White Sox are now tied with the Yankees for the most perfect games thrown (3) in their team's history.
