Personally, after trading Grandy and Jackson for Sherzer and prospects, trading Cabrera for more prospects might be something we should look at doing - not aggresively, but more us exploring just how much teams will give us for him...

Not for scraps, but for 3-4 really good prospects....

I wonder what the Red Sox would give up for Cabrera's bat.

Ellsbury, Bucholz or Lester, plus other prospects?

I'm betting the Angels would have an interest as well....

IIRC, Guillen, Magglio and others come off the books after this upcoming season. Why do't we hold on to our great young talent, wait for the old crippled players to leave and build around Cabrera?

that could very well be our plan....but just how long will Cabrera put up with losing before he demands a trade, and in doing so, decrease the value we get back for him? That is my fear...

Cabrera just signed a longterm deal when he got traded to the Tigers and ended the season playing poorly and having a domestic dispute during a series while drinking and having the GM bail his ass outta jail. His value is already low right now. He has no right to demand anything.

ok, heres whats happenin

we sign Jose Valverde for two years and resign Zumaya for one. Huff is gone to the Giants (no shock)

The Valverde deal is a bit, well, disconcerting. We need a closer, no doubt. And he is a good one, no doubt. But its for 14 million dollars and has a 9 mill option year. 7 mill a season is a lot of money, so he better be damn good. The thing that really kills me is because he was a TypeA free agent we lose our first round pick to the Astros. ouch.

thoughts?

Rumors the Tigers are after Johnny Damon. Good god, DD is downgrading the team for vets while shipping out our good young guys.

75 mil seems like reaching it but it's necessary. I'm a little worried that we overworked him last season.

Verlander is worth $75 million. He's still young, is a true ace, and eats innings. We definitely overworked him last year. Hopefully with our improved bullpen and Leyland taking off the kiddie gloves when it comes to Porcello, it should help cut down some of Justins workload.

Hes worth every penny. The gloves will come off soon...people treat young pitchers like infants these days. Soon enough

Verlander wants a sixth year. I say give him the sixth year but at a reduced price. If he wants the years, bring down the pay.

I seem to be the only person that isn't gaga over this expected contract offer. I agree that Verlander is worth probably every penny, but that doesn't help us as much as if we can get a great deal in our favor. It just seems to me that the framework of this deal is more past the line in favor of Verlander than it is for the team in terms of splitting the spoils. So while it makes sense to lock him up and pay the stiff fair price for it, I can't help but think that a sign and trade down the road might ultimately force it's way into being our best option and use of him. Hopefully this 6th year throws a wrench into the figures to muscle it down to a better deal for the team opposite of Verlander personally, to then keep the strength of this deal as the overall good value of the contract and not the option to trade him.

So Damon is saying he wants to be a Tiger. But frankly with Ordonez and Guillen at the corners, Jackson and Rayburn in Center, and Wilken Ramirez trying to get playing time, im not sure where he fits at all.

Id rather invest time in developing Austin and Wilken and playing the oddman out of Ordonez, Guillen and Rayburn at DH or something.

Don't forget Casper Wells also....

If we sign him, let's hope he has a good start to the season so we can trade him at the deadline for additional prospects....

Johnny Damon wants to sign with us. I don't see the harm in it. Give him a 2 or 3 year deal and let him retire here.

Can't we just kill Guillen? I mean, you can't pay a dead guy.
