I know Zambrano is FA and the Cubs really want him back.

Does anyone know what type of numbers he is looking for as his salary?

Not in the context of current MLB payrolls.

There are 7 teams who spend more. There are 6 more teams who spend at least $89 million. Is it really that much of an advantage?

4 year deal, I'm guessing around 70-75 million.

That $99 million is going to go up big time next year. Let's say Zambrano gets what you think he will get, about $18 million a year, that's a $6 million increase.

Soriano's pay goes up $4 million next year. Ramirez goes up $6 million next year. Lilly up $2 million. Marquis up $1.6. Dempster up $1. Howry up $1.5 and so on.

Right there that increases your payroll to $121 million.

Meanwhile we have Jenkins, Coco and Linebrink as free agents. That's about $15 million. We'll need a left fielder and closer, whether we keep those guys or not (doubtful). Beyond the $15 million we may spend a little more, MAYBE increasing our total payroll $5 million or so.

You don't think you have much of an advantage in baseballs f'd up no salary cap structure?

Fans of teams in big markets can never admit the edge they have....it just proves too much......

The bottom line is the Cubs can afford to spend $100 to $120 million.....we can't.

I'd be far less concerned with what is going on with the Brewers if I knew we could retain all these guys on our roster.... if we could just wait a year or two and let these guys grow up together.......but we can't.

I wasn't arguing the Cubs don't have an advantage over the Brewers, I was arguing they don't have that much of an advantage over all of baseball since there are many comparable payrolls.

Everyone's payroll is going up because revenues are so high, the Brewers will too.
