“We hold the keys to permission,” Brown said Tuesday at the general manager’s meetings. “We have to go through this process before we can allow Joe to go interview. Because what if he goes there and gets the job? That’s pulling from our guys. If we don’t hire him and they’re still looking for a manager and they request permission, he would be definitely a guy we would say, ‘Hey, yeah, you can talk to him.’”

Espada, however, does not need the Astros’ permission. He coached this season in the final year of his contract, a person familiar with the situation told The Athletic on Tuesday. The contract expired on Oct. 31, meaning Espada is free to speak with other teams.

What a weird ass quote.

The amount of local media people sticking up for Counsell is sad. They clearly are not in tune with the fanbase

That Lori Nickel column on JS is a trip.

Counsell wanted to reset the managerial market. That's been out there for months. The only question is whether or not he gave the Brewers a chance to match. If he didn't and he left to join the Cubs, then **** him. If the Brewers knew that he was going to get $8 million and they weren't going to match, then **** MA.

I don't really get why the JS needs a columnist and if they do why they needed to take someone off the Packers beat and make them read Michael Hunt columns and say "this is how it's done."

I don’t think there is anyway Murphy is back if he doesn’t get the Manager role. I think he either joins CC or maybe opts to retire. It likely wouldn’t be the most popular hire, but I would be okay with giving him a shot. With that said, my gut is they do not go with him.

I think if we go the rebuild route, per reports, no way are we bringing in a veteran guy like Mattingly or even a Kapler/Ross type probably. I think that would eliminate Murphy as well, although his success was with young players I guess and he knows the organization.

Murphy is a serious possibility with the idea they would hire a younger bench coach for Murphy to groom

At this point I think the idea is of Murphy as manager and Rickie Weeks as the bench coach is probably my guess

I'm cool with whoever is down with a rebuild and can develop young talent. Will Murphy want to coach a bunch of kids next season?

Murphy serving basically as a caretaker manager for the kids until Villanueva or Weeks or someone else takes over seems plausible.

I feel like he might. The crux of his resume was coaching 18-22 year olds, so it’s not like he is a guy that is wired for veterans only. It will also be his only opportunity to ever manage a MLB team again if he has that desire to do so.

Huge Counsell fan my whole life, as a player and manager. But the guy is the most overrated manager in all of MLB. He cost us numerous games with his terrible lineups and over-analytical style of managing. His PH success rate has to be at the bottom of the league. Was terrible in the post season. I wish him nothing but the worst in CHI. If he chose to go to a team in NY, CA, FL, even CLE fine...but how does a kid who grew up in MIL choose FIB land over his home town team. I bet he grew up a Cubs fan, really the only plausible explanation.

I suspect his feelings got hurt during extension talks and he soured on the organization. Cubs felt like the extra money to get him and hurt us was a double win

"The Milwaukee Brewers, who are strongly considering promoting bench coach Pat Murphy, also have their eyes on Mike Shildt if he’s not hired by the San Diego Padres."

"The Houston Astros are expected to promote Joe Espada to be their manager on Monday."

I'm hate watching the CC press conference. I **** hate this guy so much. "Go through the process and you end up on the right side". Go **** yourself.
