Brewers 2024 Discussion - Hoskins to IL, Miller Up

Payroll right now is down $16 million from last year (according to ESPN). Attendance last year was up about 1,500 per game from 2023 but was down 4,500 per game from 2019. Also down from 2018 and 2017. It doesn't look like that $16 million will be spent but it's still about 3 weeks till the opener. If things go well maybe we pick someone up at the deadline but that would be a partial season salary. And there's still a chance that Adames and his $12.5 million get moved, if not now, maybe at the deadline. Hopefully the kids perform well and we are competitive from the start. Last year we began 6-1. A 6 game losing streak in May and another 6 game losing streak in June put us at .500. A 9 game winning streak in August put us on the path to the division title. The second and third home games only drew ~18k and ~19K vs. the Mets. Attendance picked up as the team kept winning.

I feel like attendance will take a similar path this year. I expect it to be low early for sure. I think casuals are probably more butt hurt over Burnes trade, no Counsell, and thinking the team will stink. I believe I saw even Opening Day had quite a few tickets available yet. BUT I do think this team also may create a ton more interest if the youth play well as it may invigorate new hope vs last year where it felt like a lets see what happens in the playoffs (or even general apathy that we've seen this story before with this team). I bought a ticket bank this year with the team and its the first time I did anything with the team in many years from a package standpoint. Its nothing big, basically a credit to buy games without fees with some games excluded, but I'm geared up for another season.

That is interesting. If he turned down 9 figures, there is zero chance he is back after this year and that is the right call. I think at this point they're going to roll into the season with him and probably move him at the deadline if any kind of good deal is on the table. I don't love that if they are in the the playoff race as I think the PR hit, the team reaction, optics, etc will be brutal. He seems to be having a decent spring at the plate so maybe there will be a trade yet before the season, but honestly I think at this point I ride it out for a comp pick. If the team is way out of it come July, trading him then will be easier too.

Looks like Wiemer is really struggling (10 Ks in 25 ABs; .436 OPS) and Perkins has been brutal at the plate. Kind of thinking both of those guys start in AAA. Good to see Frelick and Chourio doing fairly well, MItchell been solid too.
Eric Haase (1.329 OPS in 16 ABs) is making a case to make the team too, especially since I don't think Sanchez has even played yet this spring.
Turang struggling at the plate, I just don't have much faith in him ever being a very good MLB level hitter. Dunn, Miller, Ortiz all hitting way better in spring so far.
It will be interesting to see how the opening day roster shakes out. Still a few weeks to sort itself out too and obviously will have injuries, etc...

Conspiracy theory - Lux moved off SS yesterday and Adames sat. Hopefully a trade coming.

I'd bet on one of Wiemer or Perkins making the roster just to start against lefties, Wiemer crushed lefties last year, unless they plan on giving Haase some starts in the OF which I suppose is possible

I wish Wilken would get more of an opportunity this spring. It seems like there was no chance he would be given the chance to win the third base job out of camp.

First baseman (1): Rhys Hoskins
Second baseman (1): Brice Turang
Third baseman (1): Joey Ortiz
Shortstop (1): Willy Adames
Outfielders (4): Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell
Bench/Utility (2): Jake Bauers, Andruw Monasterio
Starting Pitchers (5): Freddy Peralta, Colin Rea, Joe Ross, Jakob Junis, DL Hall
Relief Pitchers (8): Devin Williams, Trevor Megill, Joel Payamps, Abner Uribe, Hoby Milner, Taylor Clarke, Bryse Wilson, Aaron Ashby
Sal being able to handle 3rd would be huge. I love the bullpen, even if Devin has to miss time. The rotation is yikes.

I’ve went from feeling we are going to be frisky and competitive to much less optimistic. I think that starting rotation has potential to be pretty bad. Williams is hurt now. Turang, Wiemer all look like the same hitters as last year. Maybe putting too much into spring ball, but doesn’t look like many guys are jumping out. Frelick I guess. Chourio seems to be holding his own.

Pretty weird that the 26 year old William Contreras, who lead catchers in MLB with 5.6 fWAR, didn't even make the list.

Yea, it's wild Contreras didn't make the list at all. Very similar to Devin being so far behind Bednar on the Show

If the young guys don't progress it could be a long year. Hopefully Chourio shows flashes. The upside to having a down year is we'll get something for Adames at the deadline instead of nothing in the offseason. That's assuming he's playing well though.

They can be fine if Turang, Wiemer, Mitchell all suck at the plate. I never expected much from those guys.
I wouldn't think of it as a pitching rotation. It's going to be cobbled together in some cases by guys lie Junis throwing 3 innings after Ashby, etc.
