Brewers/Cards Series

Post#1 » by MickeyDavis » Wed May 8, 2024 10:52 pm

We were going to miss Sonny Gray but the Cards were rained out Wednesday. Pitching matchups aren't set completely. Gray likely goes Thursday against Myers. Freddie goes Saturday.

Thursday - 6:40
Friday - 7:10
Saturday - 6:15 (Fox)
Sunday - 1:10
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Someone behind the Classy dugout needs to start yelling at the ump, see if they can bait an ejection :D

I don't really share anyone's dislike for Bauers or Dunn. They've been okay for reserves, and a ~200 AB pace is about right for them - Bauers for power, Dunn for utility purposes.

OTOH, Golden boys Frelick and Chourio have easily been the biggest liabilities getting regular playing time so far. I'm not against taking those lumps to develop them, but let's not pretend they've been anything but awful. Frelick has probably been a negative value player since earning about 1.5 WAR - all of his career WAR and then some - in just his first 3 weeks in the majors, and Chourio has been even worse after starting his career relatively hot. Even Frelick's defense and base-running have been shaky this year, and those are supposed to be the things he can hang his hat on whether he's hitting or not.

Frelick has an OPS+ of 82, Chourio's is 75, Dunn's is 74. None of them have been great with the bat(which after reading Ken Rosenthal's article about young hitters he published yesterday doesn't seem like it should be surprising). But the difference is Dunn has been taking starts over Joey Ortiz who has been awesome this year(OPS+ of 150). Whereas Frelick & Chourio don't really have anyone behind them pushing for more PT. I think that's the key difference.

But Dunn is just a utility player, and I'm sure Ortiz will start getting a much bigger share of those PA's soon if this keeps up. Dunn has also played solid defense. You have to keep all of your reserves ready for larger roles during a long season. I think it's too early to assume that a solid but far from sensational prospect with 108 career ABs like Ortiz has already made a similar guy like Dunn completely irrelevant.

Dunn has gotten more ABs than Ortiz has this season so far, admittedly it's close. Ideally I think most of us would like to see Ortiz take the Lions share of starts at 3b over Dunn with Dunn getting 1 or 2 starts a week. Ortiz has the better prospect pedigree and has been the better player so far this season. Frelick & Chourio aren't clearly blocking a better player whereas that can't be said for Dunn. We just saw a series against our biggest division rival and Dunn started all 3 games over Ortiz.

I'm pretty down on Sal. I don't think his glove plays in CF and he doesn't have the power to play on the corners.

Chourio I'm not remotely concerned about. He's been bad for an MLB player but average for a rookie and probably ahead of most 20-year old rookies. Unless the wheels completely fall off (e.g. Holliday) I'm fine with him getting these PAs

And I agree with CLH, Dunn/Bauers are fine for what they are. Ortiz needs to be starting every day.

Chourio once again not starting. Starting Bauers & Frelick over him
