"According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Dale Thayer, who was removed from the 40-man roster last week, has elected to become a free agent.

Thayer, who will be 31 in December, went 0-3 with a 3.48 ERA in 11 appearances for the Mets this season. In 54 relief appearances for Triple-A Buffalo, Thayer went 4-3 with a 2.66 ERA, walking 15 batters and allowing 54 hits while striking out 66 in 71 innings."

I don't think the Mets were looking at him for the major league bullpen next year. They might have brought him back to pitch in AAA and be insurance in case someone gets hurt at the major league level. I don't think this is really a big deal for the Mets.
