I don't understand why people are complaing about this trade.

Tabata is YEARS away and we already have a better OF prospect in Austin Jackson. Ross Ohlendorf was one of our worst relievers this year. Jeff karstens was never gonna be useful for us a again and McCuthen is about to be 26 and hasn't even made it to the show. Granted he has solid stuff, we still have enough pitching prospects in Melancon, JB Cox and Bettances.

I bet the people who're calling Nady a scrub are the same people bitching about all the AB's melky gets. I guess you'd rather have Gardner and Melky playing everyday when one isn't ready to hit Major League pitching yet and the other is a 4th outfielder at best who only plays because of his spectacular defense and cannon for an arm.

This is also the first time I see people complaining because we added the best reliever on the market. A great lefty that can get people out and make our bullpen even better if that's even possible. We also prevented the red sox from making thiers better which is a HUGE plus.

All we need now is to make a deal for a starter and we'll be set for the rest of the year.

Why people are ripping this trade while other GM's are upset we were able to pull off this steal is beyond me.

Damaso Marte has a 1.37 ERA at home and a 6.20 ERA on the road.

Take a few extra minutes and actually do the research.

First, a relievers ERA is not how you judge them.

He had 4 bad outings on the road. 2 at atlanta the first 2 games of the season. Then 1 at Wrigley, 1 at Coors. That’s why the ERA is up.

Don't go by everything red-sox nation, err i mean ESPN, has to say.

My apologies, didn't mean to come off brash. Just was in a bad mood trying to explain how someone can not like this trade? We gave up 4A arms, and a prospect who has been going downhill. Yea he's young, but prospects flame out, espcially ones with bad makeups. Its still a win for the yankees, we didn't give up anything that will turn out to be more then a regular on a bad team.

No need to talk down to me, especially considering I said I love the deal, but thanks for clearing it up.

rappa wrote:I don't view Marte as a lefty specialist. He's a damn good reliever and look at his splits over his career he has allowed lefties to hit a whopping .206 off of him. This year he's been very good against righties as well.

Then why trade for him? We don't need more relievers. Hell, getting Marte might keep Bruney off the roster, who was having a great start to the season before he went down.

How in the world are your trashing Nady? Career .280 hitter who is gritty and absolutely DESTROYS left handers is very good.

He's a career .281/.337/.456 player. That's not bad, but it's not something I want starting in the outfield long term, unless it's in a platoon where he's facing lefties (you're right, he's good there). He's an upgrade over what's starting now, but they could've gotten the same production for cheaper, most likely. Reed Johnson's a similar player, and the Cubs signed him off the street a few months ago, for instance.

Honestly, I have a hard time believing half of you watched the yankees from 96-01. You people think we need superstars all over the field, and its just not the case. This 2 players help solidify very BIG needs for the yankees.

From now on instead of the condescending remarks you can just type SCOTT BROSIUSSSSSSSSSS in 32-pt font and save yourself the time.

Complaining this trade is worse cause we gave up McCutchen and Karstens? Ha, in all honesty I'd rather have Coke and Kontos. Kontos has a devastating slider and can sit at 94 out of the pen, which is where he'll be and Coke is a lefty with a good curveball.

Mccutchen is a shortarming Right-Hander whos about to be 26 and Karstens sucks. Get a clue Pharmcat

Fair point. I think you could go either way about who's better to keep. I'd just rather keep around a near-ready guy like McCutchen. With the question marks around Hughes and Kennedy and the age of Pettitte and Mussina having a few of these guys around as reinforcements isn't a bad idea, is all i'm saying. I sure as hell hope this is the last time Sidney Ponson ends up in our rotation.

In terms of straightforward value, this isn't a bad trade. But trading for Marte doesn't help the Yankees much more than trading for Joe Crede would have and Cashman bought Nady at peak value. I would've rather held onto Tabata and looked for a serviceable bat elsewhere.

There are question marks around Hughes & Kennedy but none of them were "Is Dan McCutchen better than them?"

Did I say that? Once again, the McCutchen thing is a minor (and very debatable, I admit) point and not the crux of why I don't like this deal.

I'm glad we didn't trade Kontos. I was really pleased with the scouting reports I'd heard of him.

Yeah, the more I read on Kontos the more I like (Admittedly, I only started reading up on him this morning). We traded the “safe” arm in McCutchen and kept the high upside arm in Kontos. I also read that Coke has gained velocity & control. Something like going from from 89 mph to sitting 93,94. They're both younger, too.

Look at it like this McCutchen & Karstens were taking up spots on the 40 man roster. After awhile we'd have to move them off of it to protect better prospects from the Rule V draft or the AAA Draft. Then we'd risk losing these guys for absolutely nothing.

Jeff Karstens being traded is addition by subtraction. That guy truly sucks, I don't remember him not getting rocked in a major league game. As others have said, McCutchen is 26 and isn't in the majors yet...how does the addition of these two to the trade make it "worse"?

I like Coke and Kontos more anyway...

Early Saturday afternoon, the Yankees confirmed the trade was completed. Nady and Marte were on their way to Boston and the team hoped they would arrive in time to be available for a 3:55 p.m. EDT game against the Red Sox.

Phil Coke is also 26... and still in Single A ball. He's really not much of a prospect. The trade-off is between Kontos and McCutchen... and neither one's a world beater, frankly.

Well, one good thing we can all agree on came out of this:

Latroy Hawkins DFA'd!

Gardner was also sent down presumably so he can keep getting at-bats in AAA. And Igawa's off the 40-man.

If you liked the trade last night, theres no way you can suddenly dislike it today because of McCutchen being in it. Hes a nice solid pitcher, but I personally never saw him as anything more than a reliever down the road. He isn't a big starting pitching prospect and is also already 26 years old, there wasn't much of a ceiling or potential with him. Hes more of a depth type of guy, which is nice to have around but is much less important than what Nady or Marte can provide.

I don't understand why every good left handed reliever is immediately dubbed a "lefty specialist." Marte is not that, he could close on a number of teams and should be our setup man (once Farnsworth returns to earth).

Hey Pharmcat, I hope you realize we can get 4. Not 1. Not 2. Not 3. But 4. Top 40 picks out of this trade too.

This is a no-brainer steal buddy unless Tabata turns out to be Manny.
