Joba injured; right shoulder stiffness

Post#1 » by cmaff051 » Tue Aug 5, 2008 2:45 am

According to YES.

Any idea what that means?

I suppose we'll know more after the game.

I doubt they'll let much more info out. Shoulder stiffness could mean anything. Either way, it f_ckin' sucks.

The longer it took for an update, the less optimistic I became.

"stiffness" AKA "we don't want to say much, because we have no good news."

Anything serious with the shoulder is as bad as it gets for a pitcher. We can't worry about tonight's game, we have to worry about Joba for this season and beyond at this point.

Abraham is saying Joba will go back to New York for MRI tests and that Girardi says Joba will miss his next start. I think they're being vague mainly because there isn't much else they can tell at this point. Hopefully this is nothing serious. That would be a nice change of pace. :sigh:

I don't mean to be negative, but if he misses more than one or two starts...it's over.

I'd hate to say it, but I don't think thats the issue. Injuries to pitching arms happen, and the injuries to both Wang and Hughes were nothing more than freak injuries. Posada had a lingering issue from spring training that he didn't rest properly then and it snowballed into something major. Sometimes injuries hurt teams more so than others, but I don't think these injuries necessarily mean a lack of work ethic or a lack of a strength and conditioning program.

The NY Post isn't a credible source, IMO. Hopefully they're just making stuff up like they usually do.

I doubt they'd make it up and make it breaking news and cover their website's main page with it.

Ok, so I'm in denial. If Joba is seriously injured, this season will be in jeopardy if Kennedy and Hughes aren't able to fill in for Ponson/Rasner and Joba effectively. But, hopefully we see them filling in for Ponson and Rasner instead of Ponson/Rasner and Joba...

With the news that he is going to see Dr. Andrews, I just hope now that Joba isn't out for all of next year too. I am resigned to the fact that he probably will not pitch again this year, but hopefully it isn't rotator cuff or anything that may require a year or more of rehab.

It seems like Kennedy, Hughes and maybe even Carl Pavano may have a lot to do with whether or not we make the playoffs this year.

yea, that is just our luck. give us a pitcher with all the talent in the world, a out of this world fast ball and the mentality to succeed and NY and he is possibly facing a serious injury.. that is just our luck...

Going to see DR. andrews is not good news, I think Tim Hudson went to see him and now he is possibly scheduled for tommy John's surgery.. good luck joba.. I am just going to think the worst and hope for the best..

Now our year, the rest of this year rest on Hughes, kennedy and possibly pavano.. wow. the irony!!

The Yankees are sending him to Andrews for a second opinion... this is the Yankees prized arm... don't read anything more than that into this...

I would like nothing more than for you to be right, but how come the Yankees can't just say "His MRI looked pretty clean, just a precautionary second opinion from the best doctor in the world because Joba is so important." The fact that they treat this crap like its a CIA mission bothers me, and that is the one reason I feel that they saw something that they did not like. It could mean nothing, but it can also mean everything. The only reason I'm not totally worried is because they would send Joba to Andrews regardless, just because Joba is so important. But like I said, the fact that they are so secretive about what they saw is a red flag for me personally. Just gotta wait and see what comes from it all.

Well it is tendinitis of the rotator cuff. I'm not a doctor and I'm not fully aware of other pitchers who have dealt with this, but it is obviously better than anything else that could have required surgery. Tendinitis is tricky because it may linger more than you'd like, and you never really know what exactly causes it. If not treated carefully and completely healed, it can lead to a torn rotator cuff. So you can imagine how cautious the Yanks will be with this, but it is certainly good news that they did not find a tear or anything else that would be serious. He will be shut down for a week to 10 days and begin a throwing program, and they will go from there. Best possible news IMO.
