Wiretap: should M's go after Prince Fielder?

Post#1 » by TTown » Mon May 2, 2011 4:21 am

taken from a larry stone piece for the seattle times.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/l ... one01.html

stone advocates that seattle should drop $180-200 on him. he also concedes fielder would DH for us with smoak's emergence this year.

serious question: would you drop that kind of money for a dh?

serious question 2: not that i'm endorsing it, but could smoak theoretically play in left? he seems like he moves well enough.

Sure. Throw a 6-7 year deal his way and any amount of money. Fielder is a beast. I just don't want to trade Smoke or Pineda in the process. Thatd be franchise suicide.

I can't stand the absurd lengths of these guaranteed contracts. Something has GOT to be done about this. Something like 5 years should be the max life of a contract. Anything more than that is crazy with all the variables involved.

Yes, I'd love to get Fielder. Wouldn't mind paying up a bit in yearly salary for him, as many of our emerging talents are reasonably priced for the time being. It's just the length of such a contract that really disturbs me.

I don't like the years or the dollar amount. That is a lot to pay a DH and unless we are going to raise payroll substantially then I don't like the idea of putting so many eggs in one basket.
