Did you get a chance to watch him during the spring? Not many M's games were broadcast but I watched two of Elias' starts. There's not a ton of info on him given his age and status as a Cuban defector, but he throws low-to-mid 90's with a hard curve that cuts across the plate towards the outside edge with downward movement. He switches arm angels sometimes which might confuse hitters some but the conventional wisdom is it's harder to remain consist when you do that.

If he can locate that curve--and he did pretty well with it this spring--he's going to make some guys look foolish.

yeah i did not get any spring games in a few stat watching but nothing video wise.

good to know he has decent stuff. out of all the pitchers he scares me the most

My objectivity is being drowned out by the copious amounts of M's Kool-Aid I'm drinking at the moment, but I have more faith in Elias than, say, Maurer when he made the jump from AA.

I think I said this in the other thread(s) but Elias was tested by Trout/Pujols/Tulo/CarGo and showed no fear. Maurer got jumpy when things started to go awry. Hard to quantify these types of things, but I wouldn't be shocked if the kid who risked imprisonment or death to escape Cuba might not be intimidated by trivial things like baseball.

true but when the lights hit on your first big league start most people might be a bit shaky. guess i am glad its vs the A's and not the Angels or Tigers etc.

Hyperbole be damned...if this team does get into the playoffs, I'll take this SP group [when Kuma and Walker are back] over that '01 team easy.

would be nice to get felix in the playoffs when he is in his prime.

the starting 3-4 would be very potent with felix/kuma/paxton/walker

not sure many would beat that tandem

Seriously, how awesome is it knowing he's waiting in AAA? If we need the depth we can give him a call, or maybe trade him if another team sees the need. The Blue Jays middle infield was suspect and it doesn't look any better with Reyes back on the DL with hamstrings issues. They seem like a poor fit trade wise but it's just an example of what can happen during the season...some MLB team will need Nick this season.

I'd like to see how he handles some time in the OF in AAA, and I like to get him some reps at 3rd if the team wants him as a true utility guy.

McLendon seems like he's more than willing to move guys around to keep them fresh. Bloomquist will probably have a bigger role on this team than I would like as a utility player, but he's competent defensively and hits lefties better than I remember him doing when he was with the M's previously.

And God do I love Cano. Non mariners fans just have no idea. I would give him that contract 100/100 times. It has been over a decade since we had a superstar talent in the middle of the order. It changes the dynamic of an offense so much and makes other guys more dangerous.
