As Johnson fiddles, Hassell makes move

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Sun Jan 20, 2008 3:34 pm

Mavs coach Avery Johnson continues to tinker with a bench rotation that remains in flux beyond Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse.

While Brandon Bass seems to have his role well in hand, averaging 20.3 minutes, Devean George, DeSagana Diop, Juwan Howard, J.J. Barea and Trenton Hassell are scrapping for playing time.

Johnson called Hassell's performance his best of the season and admitted that he hasn't given the veteran swingman a "legitimate chance" to earn playing time, adding that he just needs to stick with Hassell a little bit. So what's Hassell's status regarding the rotation?

"He's in it now, and we'll see what happens," Johnson said.

Entering Saturday's game, Johnson chose not to play the 6-foot-5 Hassell in 13 of the previous 24 games and eight in a row from Dec. 14-29.

Johnson has lauded Hassell for his work ethic and attitude, and has repeatedly said that Hassell will eventually make a significant contribution.

Before Saturday's game, Hassell, considered a defensive specialist, said he hasn't lost hope that he could work his way into the rotation.

"I like this team and I want to win a ring and I want to play," Hassell said. "This seems like my best chance to win a ring right now so I'm going to tough it out and see what happens. I'm happy that Dallas got me from Minnesota and this is where I want to be. I'm a Maverick and I'm happy to be one."

Suggestion box

Avery Johnson clearly has not been happy with the DeSagana Diop's defense, citing primarily a decrease in blocked shots, which has led to a lengthy decrease in minutes. Johnson's suggestions? "Just foul somebody hard, legally. That's a good way to do it," Johnson said. "If you're a big guy and you get the ball inside, just dunk on somebody. There are ways to get more minutes and more attention and all of our guys know how to do it."

Hassell had 6 points, 4 boards, 3 assists in 19 minutes last night
Diop had 8 points, 8 boards, and 3 blocks in 20 minutes (although several of those boards were on his patented dunk attempt gone wrong)

good for Hassel. I was really excited that we were able to get him. He has a very strong mid range jumper and his size and defensive reputation really caught my attention.

Unfortunately he looked out of shape most of the season and never really found his rythm.

I hope Avery gets him some PT so we can figure our if he really has anything or not.

PS why the hell were 5 starters on the court with a 20 point lead with 6 minutes left in the game. Empty the damn bench and get some PT to the young guys. I know it is blasphemy but I really don't like Avery's decisions sometimes.

I was thinking the same thing for a while now and have lost confidence in Avery.

Hell, they hadn't played a game in about a week. Starters "need the work" too, after a long layoff. And as someone on the team (JHo?) said after the game (saw the quote or heard the interview but dont recall who said it, sorry), once they got a big lead, they were getting gametime work on things they might need down the road in the playoffs.

I was impressed with both Hassel and Diop in person. Hassel was everywhere, and Diop got open. However, no one has ever told him to go up strong and dunk it. He missed two shots he tried to lay in. Now, he did get the rebound and close the deal, but he should be pulling the rim over shaq style on easy ops like that

Good for Hassell, I never thought he belonged in Avery's doghouse. I hope he doesnt screw it up.
