Fantastic athlete, but dumb as rocks when he gets the ball... Dont expect him to pass. For the 4 million a year hes getting paid, hes a solid bet though. Ill stick with Singleton for significantly less, being just as productive

I don't know why some folks are worried about this. Even with Marc Cuban's money would he want to spend 5.8 mil on a guy who will play about 12 minutes a game behind the best player on your team? And unlike a swing player who could possibly play a couple positions so you could find some extra time for him, Gortat is a Center and can not really play other postitions. It would not be wise in any way for the Magic to sign Gortat at that money unless they could get playing time for him.


Besides if you remember a couple of years ago the Mavericks drafted the following guys for the Magic. So they can use this guy as a 12 minute a game backup for next to nothing as opposed to spending nearly 6 mil next year for a backup to your best player.

I will be happy giving Dirk's backup PF minutes to Humprhies. I feel he will be better than Bass.

PROS: Strong. Really strong. Best around the basket. Goes up hard to slam. Good hands. Doesn't drop many passes. Really aggressive player and tough guy. Can shoot the 10-15 footer well if left wide open. Humble guy too, meaning he'll listen to coaches and he won't take bad shots.

CONS: Can't dribble. Can't create his own shot. Can't pass. Average rebounder. Short for both the center spot and power forward position, but that's where he's best suited to play since he can't dribble the ball.

I think Gortat can play PF if he needed to (I know actually... I've seen him and Dwight play together before and it was fine). Bass alleviates that need for him to play PF so it does help our chances but I could see them matching (and paying the salary tax penalty) for less than one year and S&T him next year. He will be a highly sought after big man with that contract. Very reasonable. They would have no problem moving him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed we get him but I'm nervous...

Hes a decent backup, I dont see him being starter material, even in Orlando. Hes a great athlete, but he just wants to get points. If Stan Van Gundy could do some sort of Jedi mind trick to make Bass start passing off of the rebound, then its a great pickup. Until then, get ready for him to get blocked a good 3 or 4 times per game

Any big who attacks the rim, great FT shot and great mid-range shooter can be a starter: see David West (minus being an all out punk).

His career average is higher than his ordinary self. You can learn a lot about him from the simple fact. He's not a traditional big. He shoots well. He rebounds well. He can attack the rim or hit midrangers consistently.

He is strong, but he is also 6'7". If he was a SF and had the shooting/ball-handling, he would be one of the strongest SF in the league, but since he is a PF, he gets muscled out because of his size. He'll be a solid role player for Orlando, though he's never had the "potential" that sime claim. He's a great energy player who can score, but he'll never be a starting caliber type player like some claim he is IMO.

Solid pickup for Orlando for 4.5 million a year.
