DRays vs. Angels (7/17 - 7/19)

Tuesday, July 17 Tropicana Field | 7:10 PM ET
LAA Ervin Santana, RHP (5-10, 5.97)
Angels (55-36) @ TB James Shields, RHP (7-5, 3.98)
Devil Rays (35-56)

Scouting Report:
Angels: Santana's final start before the break certainly wasn't his best and extended his recent losing streak to four. In his shortest outing since April 4, the right-hander lasted just three innings against the Yankees, allowing nine runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two. He gave up three-run homers to Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano before his quick exit, as the Halos lost, 12-0.

Rays: Shields had a rough go against the Yankees in his first start of the second half. The Rays right-hander has been the ace of the staff, but he's struggled with one element all season: giving up too many home runs. Against the Yankees, Shields allowed three in one inning, including back-to-back home runs to Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. Shields took his fifth loss of the season, but he continues to show good stuff with four quality pitches -- fastball, cutter, slider and changeup -- which he can throw in any count.

Wednesday, July 18 Tropicana Field | 7:10 PM ET
LAA Bartolo Colon, RHP (6-4, 6.44)
Angels (55-36) @ TB Scott Kazmir, LHP (6-6, 4.18)
Devil Rays (35-56)

Scouting Report:
Angels: Colon began the season as if he had another Cy Young Award on his mind, going 5-0 in his first six starts after overcoming a shoulder injury that wiped out his 2005 season. But it's been a struggle ever since. Hurt repeatedly by fastballs up in the strike zone, Colon is 1-4 with a 9.07 ERA in his past eight starts. He's yielded 41 earned runs and 68 hits in 40 2/3 innings. The long ball -- 11 homers in those eight starts, 15 altogether -- has undermined Colon. His stuff looks solid, but his command has been inconsistent. Tampa Bay could be a nice place to start a turnaround -- he's 9-1 in 16 career starts against the Rays with a 3.31 ERA, and he's 3-0 at Tropicana Field.

Rays: On Friday night against the Yankees, Kazmir won for the first time at Tropicana Field since July 3, 2006. The Rays left-hander allowed no earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out seven over six innings. Once again, Kazmir showed great stuff, but had to exit early due to a high pitch count.

Thursday, July 19 Tropicana Field | 12:10 PM ET
LAA Kelvim Escobar, RHP (10-3, 3.04)
Angels (55-36) @ TB Andy Sonnanstine, RHP (1-4, 5.57)
Devil Rays (35-56)

Scouting Report:
Angels: Turning in yet another All-Star-caliber performance, despite being snubbed for an appearance at the MidSummer Classic, Escobar employed each pitch in his arsenal to great effect. His offspeed pitches were particulary potent, as Escobar held Texas to one earned run on six hits through eight innings in a 2-1 win -- though the right-hander did not get the decision. In his past two starts, he has struck out a combined 14 batters, allowing one earned run in each contest.

Rays: On Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd at Tropicana Field, Sonnanstine looked composed in his first career start against the Yankees. But the rookie right-hander made two big mistakes -- home runs to Hideki Matsui and Bobby Abreu -- which accounted for three of the five runs he surrendered over 6 1/3 innings. Though Sonnanstine was tagged with the loss, he continued to mix it up on the mound, changing speeds and arm angles while staying around the strike zone with most of his pitches.

Rays will win 8-6.

Ever the optimist.

Damn,

The "Human Hit" a.k.a. Casey Fossum is in for the 9th.

8-6 may happen yet.

Hitters clipping Fossum for a .346 avg YTD.

Fossum gets it done. One inning, 2 hits, one run.

Batters .400 against Fossum tonight.

I wonder how many 3 batter innings he's had this year.

Game 2, Rays lead 7-1 after 7 innings.

Kazmir had command tonight going 7 innings.

Maybe his best performance of the year.
