Orioles ask Rangers about Millwood

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Dec 1, 2009 3:09 am

The Orioles have recently asked the Rangers about the availability of right-handed starter Kevin Millwood, major league sources told FOXSports.com.

The talks between the clubs are not serious, one source said. However, Millwood is one of a number of options that the Orioles are pursuing.

Thanks in part to the development of Scott Feldman, Tommy Hunter, Derek Holland and Neftali Feliz, Texas finds itself in the rare position of being able to trade starting pitching.

According to one source, the Rangers' motivation in moving Millwood would be to clear money off the payroll to sign free agent slugger Jermaine Dye.

Another source, however, said that the Rangers do not believe that swapping out Millwood for Dye would be sensible. The Rangers expect to compete next season, the source said, and Millwood is better than any pitcher the team could replace him with.

The only reason the Rangers would consider moving Millwood would be to eliminate his $12 million salary in 2010. Millwood went 13-10 with a 3.67 ERA in 31 starts last season.

I thought the Rangers just by keeping their payroll the same would have enough to re-sign everyone and add an $8-$10 million dollar player in the process? This team after losing all of its FA and resiging everyone should be around 62-64 million and considering they spent a little over $76 last year they should have the money to go out and get a Dye without making a move.

O's have deal in place for Millwood

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports the Orioles have a tentative agreement in place to acquire right-hander Kevin Millwood from the Rangers for reliever Chris Ray.
The Rangers will also kick in some cash, to offset some of Millwood's $12 million salary for 2010. According to Zrebiec, a deal could be made official by as early tonight, as the teams review medical records and await approval from major league basebal, with more than $1 million expected to change hands. Millwood will provide the veteran workhorse the Orioles covet, while Ray, who has closing experience, will look to get back on track in Texas. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orio ... 7522.story

Newberg is reporting that rangers would then sign Rich harden to a 1 yr 7.5/ 1 yr 11.5 option contract to replace Millwod. I also read that Sheets wants $12mm, what he was offered and did not sign before being hurt.

Deal is done per ESPN but it sounds like Ray maybe going to Tampa for catcher Dionner Navarro.

Rangers get Ben Snyder in the rule 5 draft as the Player to be named in the Millwood deal.

Ben Snyder, Left-hander
San Jose Giants | High-A ball
Age: 22
School: Ball State University
Status: Undecided

The 2006 fourth round pick is your classic lefty... Ben Snyder has a mid- to high-80s fastball with a good change-up and an OK breaking ball. He has done nothing but succeed in pro ball, unlike his brother (and former first round pick Brian Snyder). Snyder won 16 games last year in Low A-ball but should have been promoted mid-season because he was obviously better than the competition. He currently has a 2.00 ERA in 85.2 innings and has allowed just 79 hits. He has allowed 18 walks and 73 strikeouts. Snyder is probably due for another promotion.

The Rangers are gambling this year will see if letting Byrd go and trading Millwood for guys that are hurt pay off. Hopefully Hicks will sell the team and the Rangers can become a semi-real major league team again.

dangerous gamble. Did not pay off with galaraga, Camaniti, etc team. If Hicks was afraid after Chan Ho ordeal to sign any pitcher, I guess he is extremely desperate now.

Return to Texas Rangers
