Correct. The interest alone..... he must really have hated Toronto.

Remember that he also left a year early in Japan too rather than waiting one more year to become a true free agent, which likely cost him hundreds of millions of dollars.

He just doesn't seem to much care about maximizing his earnings.

Honestly, I'll take a different tack. That's fine. That 's up to him. God bless. Be happy in Newport Beach.

But if that's true (and evidence supports it). Then don't screw a different franchise (or the perception of them, or their FO) with smoke and mirrors. He could have signed for 600M in LA pretty easily without the weird account or the lying.

Shohei may not care much about money, but I can guarantee you his agents do.

Literally 5% on 680MILLION over 10 years is over 560 million in interest lost. (edit: ok he gets the money in yearly instalments..... but I went low on the rate)

What are interest rates these days again??? You think he doesn't have a financial team that can outperform the market?? Or explore opportunities the average 100+millionaire could never access???

He only wanted LAD from the start. Obviously, it's all he wanted.

Our entire organization was lied to, fooled, and used.

Yeah but that’s sort of how free agency works if agents play their cards right.

But he didn't NEED to. He could have taken a more standard 500M/10yr contract from anyone and come out ahead financially.

Why did he "play his cards right" versus the Jays, and then bend over backwards for the Dodgers. There was no financial reason, as it turns out. It's psychopathic.

If I’m the State of California, do I ask for change?

This could be used as a way to circumvent state taxes?

Because he wanted to play for the Dodgers and his agents wanted to maximize the contract he was gonna get playing for the Dodgers (for their own benefit as much as his). I don't really see what's too surprising for that. It's how this game is played.

I think he'd still pay state tax on it because the labour was done in California but I suck with finances so I can be wrong.

If he gets dealt before the massive part of the contract hits. He’d pay taxes there.

While this fine in this cba, don't think they for saw someone basically deferring their whole contract at tune of 680 mil.

When I heard unprecedented deferral I figured half his contract, not 90 percent of his contract. Lol

Like it should be fine to deferral but it should be part of the current tax structure.

Huge advantage for dodgers that can employ 4 MVPs and still go and add top arm.

I don't hate othani at all, but I hope Dodger don't sniff the playoffs or don't win a game going forward.

From what I read is the 680 mil, if his residence is say Japan by then, then no state can tax it which makes sense

Makes sense but whatever money he saves on taxes he loses a ton in buying power/inflation because there's 0 interest on these payments.

Quick google search, California tax rate for him would be 12.4%?

This I can get behind. Clearly baseball needs a cap, or better revenue sharing, or something. The point is this would be true if we’d signed him, and within baseball circles a lot of people actually point to the Jays B2B as the origins of combining big spending with sound management, which doesn’t sound revolutionary but was previously for w/e reason (probably institutional laziness imo) more an either/or in practice.

The funny thing is if la didn't match this contract and it was us signing him to this kind of deal, I'm sure the US media that was dunking on us, would demand MLB to void the contract for this kind of circumvention

Funny how when the NBA players took less money to form superteams, it was despicable, but when it's Ohtani taking less money to join a 100-win team, he's doing everything he can to win and it's good for the sport.

I've moved on

but Jays are in a tough spot now and Ross needs to get creative. Ownership will also be watching since they need butts in seats next season
