It’s pretty clear the Toronto org is philosophically inclined to emphasize contact% — they’re fifth in baseball in contact% over the years 2021-2023. Contact for contact’s sake is how you wind up like Cleveland.

I don’t know if that philosophy is “to blame” for Vlad Jr. merely being All-Starish as opposed to Best Hitter In Baseball-ish, but the rest of the AL East is thankful for it.

Toronto also has the 5th highest Oppo% rate in that timeframe too. That might work for an outlier like Bichette, but a contact-oriented, “spray it to all fields” approach is not befitting of that lineup.

I recall an interview with Danny Jansen last season where he specifically mentioned how that approach doesn’t work for him, and he feels at his best when he’s in “pull” mentality. His elite power numbers for a catcher speak for themselves. Vladdy may want to heed his teammate’s advice.

Not with IKF and Biggio in it

Best offensive lineup is probably as follows:
RF Springer
1B Vlad
SS Bo
3B Turner
LF Davis
C Kirk
DH Vogelbach
2B Clement
CF Varsho
One flew east, one flew west, one flew over the cuckoo’s nest.

I would buy this argument if vladdy was actually making solid contact and spraying singles to all fields, but that’s not the case. He legitimately looks lost at the plate like he has no game plan, he routinely misses meatballs, and is constantly hitting groundballs which means there’s something wrong with his timing and swing mechanics. This is all on Guerrero.

Another meatball Guerrero missed. Contact percent nothing to do with it

See I’ll take that kind of contact I’m not even mad he’s not hitting home runs is just he’s gotta do things like that more

Maybe we'll learn more about Davis' weaknesses from John Schneider tonight in his post-game remarks.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."
