Wow. Gurriel just stole a run from the Jays with that catch.

Having Varsho in the outfield saves us more runs than having him at the plate costs us.

Kikuchi not happy, pulling him little early. This 3rd time through lineup is getting overmanaged vs adjusting your pitching tactics.

Kikuchi walked three and hit two more in less than five innings. Barely threw more than 50% strikes over 89 pitches. Definitely not overmanaging to remove him before his wildness inevitably cost us runs.

Going by his game log, Schneider has him on a fairly strict 90 pitch limit.

finally getting those hits with risp. portends to a good 2nd half if they keep it up. numbers should be on their side there.

Late innings Danny Jansen has reached “Jose Bautista coming up against Darren O’Day” levels of excitement for me.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Think that mostly owes to Kikuchi being thoroughly mediocre and our bullpen being very good, given that we don't do the same for other starters. Kikuchi's not good (he has the worst HR/9 among starters leaguewide by a laaaaaaarge margin); he isn't as bad as last year, but he puts a tonne of guys on base, and the main thing supporting him at the moment is that he's top five in MLB in stranding runners, which isn't sustainable. In general he's a lit fuse on a large bomb, and you want to wring a few innings out of him and then get the 'pen in.

Maybe Jansen isn’t the clutchest hitter since Bautista, maybe he’s the clutchest Jays hitter ever?

A walk with a 5 run lead to start the 9th. Batter didn’t even swing once.

Fernandez?

I was on an externship in Houston in’98 and my roommate and I dubbed him “the money man”.

FFS, you can't walk the leadoff hitter in the ninth when you have a five run lead. A walk is just as bad as a HR in this situation.

As it stands he doesn't pitch in anything even approaching medium leverage...a five-run ninth-inning lead is the most-important situation he's faced to date (it's the first time he has entered with the team leading by fewer than 10 runs), and even then he got lifted before the game was actually on the line. He'll get shunted into the minors when we pick up a reliever or two at the deadline, but we're clearly avoiding situations where he can really harm anything anyway.
