Toronto Star

Doc hurls another gem
By Mark Zwolinski
Halladay, brilliant in all six starts this season, went one better last night even though it was hard to think he could have improved on his wins over Boston last week and a 10-inning gem against Detroit on April 23.

But there was Halladay, giving up just five hits in going the distance and setting down the Texas Rangers like they were sandlot kids in a 6-1 victory before 19,041 at the Rogers Centre.

Another tender moment
By Allan Ryan
The injury-riddled Jays took another hit last night when it was announced during Roy Halladay's 6-1 nugget over the Texas Rangers that left-hander Gustavo Chacin would go on the disabled list with a strained left shoulder.

Chacin, 2-1 with a 5.60 ERA for five starts, last pitched Saturday, needing 95 pitches to endure 5 1/3 innings, about his average for the season.

Sore Chacin on DL
By Ken Fidlin
Chacin has been pulled from his next start, Thursday in Cleveland and that assignment will go to Dustin McGowan, who has been pitching well at Syracuse. McGowan has an 0-2 record but has a 1.64 ERA and has struck out 29 batters in 22 innings.

Doc overpowers Rangers bats
By Ken Fidlin
The hardest-hit ball of the night for Texas was a long Blalock fly ball in the right-centre gap that right fielder Stairs tracked down just steps from the wall for the third out of the seventh inning. When Stairs got back to the dugout, the first guy waiting to deliver a high-five was Halladay.

Overshadowed by Halladay's performance, Padilla did not surrender another run until Lind's two-out solo homer to right in the seventh made the score 4-1. But Padilla, who has struggled this year, was unlucky to be matched against Halladay. On many nights, his seven-inning, six-hit, four-run job would have been good enough to win.

Halladay hurls Texas-sized victory
By Robert Macleod
After giving up a run-scoring double to Sosa in the first inning to give the Rangers a brief 1-0 lead, Halladay faced the minimum number of batters over the next six innings and retired 19 of 20 before he gave up a double to Brad Wilkerson in the eighth.

"He has amazing stuff," Toronto second baseman Aaron Hill said. "Even when he missed [the plate], it was by an inch or so."

Jay minor leaguer suspended for positive drug test
By Robert Macleod
Toronto Blue Jays minor-league pitching prospect Matt Roney was suspended for 50 games yesterday after a positive drug test.

"It's disappointing in a sense, the guy has an opportunity to play," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said last night of Roney, whom he signed to a contract in November. Roney was playing at Triple-A Syracuse. "You only get so many years to play this game, and to kind of waste some of it away on something you choose to do as opposed to having something else happen, that's disappointing."

Roney, 27, a first-round pick of the Colorado Rockies in 1998, and was 2-0 and had a 0.90 earned-run average in 10 innings with Syracuse this season.

Surgery an option
By Robert Macleod
For the first time, the Toronto Blue Jays are conceding that Brandon League, who was expected to be the team's main setup man out of the bullpen this season, may have to undergo surgery.

"I think we're going to let it run its course a little bit longer and then we may have a little bit more analysis on it to see if he may need surgery," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said before last night's game against the Texas Rangers. He indicated that if surgery is necessary, it would be to the shoulder.

Jays finish with winning month as Doc dominates in 6-1 win over Rangers
By Shi Davidi
"We have had our share of adversity to start the season, but so have a lot of teams, that's never an excuse," said all-star third baseman Troy Glaus, himself just back from a stint on the DL. "We probably could have done more offensively, more pitching, everything could have been a little better."

Except for Halladay (4-0).

Was Roney an option to be called up? I would think he would be based on his numbers but they may be misleading.
