Yeah, even i'll admit it kinda sucks that a few teams have the resources to compete every year without trouble. But there's no viable solution to this problem. And all things considered, this is still a league where competent management (and in the playoffs, luck) wins out over money. If you want to see a really imbalanced league in action, look at the Premier League in Europe, where one of Manchester United, Chelsea, or Arsenal wins every year. Baseball doesn't look so bad now, does it.
It does to me as a Brewer fan because we lost CC to the Yanks will lose Price soon enough. It doesn't do much good to be great at developing guys when you can't afford to keep them once they get good.
It also kills me when people say money doesn't matter because look at the different teams that have won the World Series. People need to look at the big picture. Look at the teams that have won the most games over the past 10 years. The obvious example is the Yankees. They have spent the most money, have the most wins, have gone to the playoffs the most and have won the World Series the most. The teams that win the world series almost without exception are top 10 or higher in payroll. Yes, every once in a great while every rule has the exception. If money truly didn’t matter that much you'd have playoff teams spread out in their payroll rank. That just isn't the case.
If the Yankees make $100 million per season just off of a cable deal while my Brewers have a total revenue of around $80 million, well what chance do they have over the long run? I know this is obvious for most but baseball just doesn't seem to care. At some time many fans will reach the point where they just stop caring. Every season for like 15 years the Yankees start the season as one of the top 1 or 2 picks to win the world series. It isn't because they've been the best talent evaluators. Again, I don't fault them as if I had the cash I'd want to win too. It's just that they are a senior in high school playing ball with a couple of other seniors against a bunch of 7th graders. At some point the 7th graders are going to have had enough. I know I've reached that point as this might be my first posts on the Real GM baseball board. I know my team can't afford a payroll to have a real shot at winning the World Series. I know we will lose guys like CC and Fielder to teams like the Yankees. I'll just have to enjoy my teams 1 out of 6 years when things fall right and we make a run at a wild card. The rest of the time I'll be the 7th grader being dunked on by those darn Yankees.
It's called revenue sharing in MLB. Look it up. Your team gets tons of money from teams like the Yankees. Where exactly is that money going? Not to the teams, apparently. Don't blame the Yankees for spending whatever it takes to win. It's such a farce and utter hypocrisy. Don't try and act like if this was the Brewers winning the WS with that payroll that you would be angry and downgrade their victory because of it. Don't try and act like you wouldn't want an owner committed to winning like a George Steinbrenner. All these posts are out of bitterness. Flawed system or no flawed system, teams like the Brewers and Pirates can compete if they spend the money given to them in revenue sharing. They really can. And it wouldn't hurt to spend some of their own money on the team either. Too bad they don't. Do not blame the Yankees, blame yourselves.
