Yeah, even i'll admit it kinda sucks that a few teams have the resources to compete every year without trouble. But there's no viable solution to this problem. And all things considered, this is still a league where competent management (and in the playoffs, luck) wins out over money. If you want to see a really imbalanced league in action, look at the Premier League in Europe, where one of Manchester United, Chelsea, or Arsenal wins every year. Baseball doesn't look so bad now, does it.

It does to me as a Brewer fan because we lost CC to the Yanks will lose Price soon enough. It doesn't do much good to be great at developing guys when you can't afford to keep them once they get good.

It also kills me when people say money doesn't matter because look at the different teams that have won the World Series. People need to look at the big picture. Look at the teams that have won the most games over the past 10 years. The obvious example is the Yankees. They have spent the most money, have the most wins, have gone to the playoffs the most and have won the World Series the most. The teams that win the world series almost without exception are top 10 or higher in payroll. Yes, every once in a great while every rule has the exception. If money truly didn’t matter that much you'd have playoff teams spread out in their payroll rank. That just isn't the case.

If the Yankees make $100 million per season just off of a cable deal while my Brewers have a total revenue of around $80 million, well what chance do they have over the long run? I know this is obvious for most but baseball just doesn't seem to care. At some time many fans will reach the point where they just stop caring. Every season for like 15 years the Yankees start the season as one of the top 1 or 2 picks to win the world series. It isn't because they've been the best talent evaluators. Again, I don't fault them as if I had the cash I'd want to win too. It's just that they are a senior in high school playing ball with a couple of other seniors against a bunch of 7th graders. At some point the 7th graders are going to have had enough. I know I've reached that point as this might be my first posts on the Real GM baseball board. I know my team can't afford a payroll to have a real shot at winning the World Series. I know we will lose guys like CC and Fielder to teams like the Yankees. I'll just have to enjoy my teams 1 out of 6 years when things fall right and we make a run at a wild card. The rest of the time I'll be the 7th grader being dunked on by those darn Yankees.

It's called revenue sharing in MLB. Look it up. Your team gets tons of money from teams like the Yankees. Where exactly is that money going? Not to the teams, apparently. Don't blame the Yankees for spending whatever it takes to win. It's such a farce and utter hypocrisy. Don't try and act like if this was the Brewers winning the WS with that payroll that you would be angry and downgrade their victory because of it. Don't try and act like you wouldn't want an owner committed to winning like a George Steinbrenner. All these posts are out of bitterness. Flawed system or no flawed system, teams like the Brewers and Pirates can compete if they spend the money given to them in revenue sharing. They really can. And it wouldn't hurt to spend some of their own money on the team either. Too bad they don't. Do not blame the Yankees, blame yourselves.

You're way off base with this (no pun intended). First off, I never said anything against the Yankees for how they spend. If you look back a few posts you'll see I said they are my second favorite team. You'll also see that I wrote that I respect the fact they do whatever it takes to win. I'll assume you never read my prior post because if you had you never would accuse me of bitterness. After all, I was cheering for the Yankees.

My guess is you have no clue how revenue sharing specifically works, how much money teams like the Brewers get or how those teams spend that money. Be honest...off the top of your head you have no clue what the Brewer payroll is, revenue is or how much we received from revenue sharing. It's obvious if revenue sharing was leveling the playing field you still would be seeing teams like the Yankees buying their way into the playoffs year after year. It is pretty simple stuff. The Yankees make more money so they can spend more money. If Bill Gates bought the Brewers and signed your best players away and signed the other best players and had a $500,000,000 payroll my guess is you'd also be calling the whole situation a joke. I'm sure you wouldn't be blaming yourself or the Yankees but would be just like me and blaming the stupid system.
This isn't rocket science.

No, not really. I appreciate an owner that wants to win. If Bill Gates bought your team, more power to you. But a $500 million payroll doesn't automatically mean you win the World Series either. The games are played on the field with players, not payroll. In the end, the Yankees defeated all their competition out there on the field and deserved the title.

As for the Brewers and Pirates and teams like that, of course you make less money in a smaller market. But that doesn't mean you have to have the payroll the size of minor league team. Some owners (like KC for example) spend next to nothing so they can make a profit. They don't care if the team loses. On the other side of the coin, Steinbrenner has been losing money for years (yes, LOSING money) with this payroll and nothing to show for it yet year after year he pumps money into the team. There is a lot of factors that play into this but I don't think it's right to blame the system for anything. Why? Well, take a look at Pharmcat's link. It explains a lot and pretty much sums it up perfectly.

Not sure what ones has to do with the other?

But, the NYY are taking advantage of the system that the MLB has in place. And, there's NO frikkin way the MLBPA is going to institute a cap space with the exorbitant salaries the players are able to get.

When you have Jared Wright being paid $27M, you know it's not changing.

When was Jared Wright paid 27 million from the Yankees? I think it's much more pathetic that teams can have payrolls of 15-20 million then the Yankees have 200 million payroll. They're the biggest market, have some of the best and most famous players, and people all over the world love the team. They should naturally have a higher payroll then most other teams, and when you factor in that the Steinbrenners actually care about the team winning, unlike teams like the Rays and Marlins, then it's pretty obvious they will have a higher payroll.

How do you stop this? Your owner can either spend more money to get more fans in the seats and create more revenue, or the owners can do what they continue to do and not care about how the team does and only about how much money they're making.

I think something needs to be done with baseball. It's pretty absurd to have a team getting 3 of the top free agents, just by simply overpaying for them. Now of course I don't blame the Yankees either, they do what they are allowed to do.

I do believe baseball needs a limit on how much a team can spend per season, but I also think they need a minimum as well. And if a team can't afford I guess they should sell the team. It's pretty absurd that teams can pocket revenue sharing money from the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, etc and no spend it on their team.

To think there could be a level playing ground is pretty silly, but I do think it could be improved.

I think people fial to realize is that most of the team was home grown despite what everyone thinks.

Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettite, Melky Cabrera, Robinson Cano, Brett Gardner, Joba Chamberlain, Phil hughes, Alfredo Aceves, David Robertson, Ramiro Pena, Chien Ming Wang and Phil Coke were all on the world series roster. 14 guys.

We traded for A-rod by trading away the best 2nd baseman at the time in Alfonso Soriano. A 40-40 guy nonetheless. So we took on that huge salary, one WE didn't give him.

We traded for guys who's value were low at the time like Nick Swisher, Jose Molina, Damaso Marte, Jerry Hairston and Eric Hinske.

We signed Matsui in 03, we were the ONLY team that was gonna sign him, he made it very clear that it was either the yankees or continue playing in Japan.

We Signed Johnny Damon to screw the Red Sox, he wasn't a top FA that year.

The only recent FA signings we had on the roster were the ones we signed last off season. Teixeira, Sabathia and Burnett.

In total, lets see who has more FA signings and traded for players on their rosters who are actually relevant:

Yankees:
Sabathia
A-Rod
Teixeira
Marte
Swisher
Burnett
Matsui
Damon

Red Sox:
Ortiz
Beckett
Lowell
Wagner
Drew
Bay
Martinez
Okajima

Cubs:
Ramirez
Lee
Harden
Lilly
Soriano
Bradley
Fukudome

Mets:
K-Rod
Delgado
Santana
Putz
Beltran
Castillo
Sheffield
Schneider
Perez
Maine

Detroit:
Ordonez
Cabrera
Willis
Guillen
Washburn
Huff
Polanco
Jackson

:/ From what I see the yankees sign for as many FA and trade for players as much any other team, the only thing is that they're willing to outbid for guys they really want. If anything you guys should be pissed with your teams ownership. I mean the Twins owner was the richest of any MLB team yet he constantly trims the payroll. The Steinbrenners put money into their team, hell they're even losing money not making any. That shows their commitment.

Fine, the team was home grown. That doesn't change the fact that the Yankees have money to keep all of their core players while other teams don't and then provide the home grown players with the top players in free agency.

Well lets be honest that home grown talent wasn't going to win **** without buying the three guys this past offseason. Other teams have done as well or better than the Yankees in the home grown area. But of course those teams can't afford Tex, CC, and Burnett.
