How do you think he gained all that power? Previously to joining Texas, his last 3 years he average 41.5 HR while hitting no higher than 42 HR. First year in Texas, he jumps up to 52, then 57 then 2003, the season he got busted, went back to 47, then 36 the following year with the Yanks. Then numbers have gone up and down because of nagging injuries. No question he has gotten much much bigger.

From 1996-2000 = 184 HR
From 2001-2005 = 240 HR

That's a 56 HR difference. I don't think the bandbox in Texas made all that big of a difference.

Then 1999:

Dude got absolutely stacked. Sorry folks, Canseco is right again. Has he been wrong before? No, because he knows all of it. It's sad that Selig tuned his head though. And I'm not saying this because I don't like the Yankees because I do and love their tradition more, but at the same time, you can't be blind.

He's tainted and this is exactly what no one in baseball wanted. Thomas & Griffey are the ones who didn't cheat. I'd bet my life on that. Everyone else, well they all probably did.

LMFAO. You do realize that the ballpark in Arlington is like Little League-dimensions, right? And that not only does Arlington cater to RH hitters like nobody's business but Yankee Stadium has historically been death on right-handed hitter power numbers? And, prior to Texas, ARod played a majority of his games at the Kingdome/Safeco?

ARod's IsOP in Texas:

2001: .304
2002: .324
2003: .301

You could probably argue that his 2002 numbers were pretty sketchy, but he also hit an inordinate amount of flyballs that season (similar to the 2007 season in which he put up a .331 IsOP playing for the Yankees).

Yeah, he probably juiced but to assume his numbers (especially those in Texas) were anything other than park-induced noise is silly. And wrong.

This story epitomizes the problem I have with today's mainstream media. 104 players tested positive for steroids in 2003, wnd we have heard the name of ONE of them in the press. Obviously, usage of steroids was very common at that point in time and we should be spreading our disgust to another 103 people, not just ARod.

This was the biggest name that could possibly leak. He was the supposed to be the symbol for everything that was right in the game, and it turns out it was all fake. Few people care if a random utility player tested positive. Many people care if the guy who was supposed to return the home run record to legitimacy does.

He was the Harvey Dent of this generation. If he breaks the record and is never caught using steroids, he shows that the generation was not completely led by degenerates who did it for the money and fame. He broke the record clean which lessens the blow by guys like Clemens and Bonds.

But then he got caught. Of course his name was the one to leak(there have been others in the Mitchell Report who were also in the 2003 random test) because he's the biggest name. Biggest name = biggest news.

So IF the golden standard did steroids whose left? I think they go after Albert Pujols as the other golden standard to make little kids cry everywhere. I mean A-Rod was supposed to be the pure player to beat Bonds homerun record and bring it back to the "Good Guys". I can only imagine the implications that this is having on people everywhere.

What about Sosa? I know he forgot how to speak the English language during Congress hearing but has there ever been evidence, or him being tested positive for steroids?

Edit: I'm glad Griffey's name hasn't come up because he was my favorite player growing up.

I really hope Ken's name doesn't come up. I always thought of him as legit.

Just ask Jose. So far he looks like Nostradamus.

It’s because there’s this sort of pastoral and poetic innocence that is culturally ingrained in baseball and people don’t want that childlike naiveté destroyed. People hold baseball players in a much higher moral regard than that of other sports.

I disagree to this extent. Baseball is a stat driven sport, particularly individual stats, both seasonal and career. I was a baseball stat hound from like the 1st grade on. The box scores were the first thing I read in the morning.

The steroids thing just royally effed this up. Sure, you could always argue about ballpark dimensions, lowering the pitcher mound, a juicier baseball, etc, etc... in regards to statistical comparisons in our cracker-barrel debates and arguments; but those weren't cheating.

I have to admit the steroids thing effed-up this stat-love thing for me too. It just did. I don't think I'll ever get it back.

Bulltalk,

Why does the steroid abuse ruin it for you in a way that decades of greenie (amphetamine) abuse didn't?

So now we just need Pujols, Howard, Berkman, Ortiz, Manny, Joba, Lidge, Valverde, etc etc etc, and uh....well, pretty much the majority of baseball players to go ahead and admit to it and we can finally move on!

-.-

I think those players should be named that were with Arod. If and when they are then you most likely have the whole list.
