I don't really get why they're giving up on Lance already. I guess it has to do with the extension...which makes sense.

He has two years left on his rookie deal. Another year to decide on the 5th year option. It wasn't that.

The rumor is that Lance & Darnold have the same agent. Lance & the agent requested a trade. This whole thing has blown up in their face.

It's not that hard to understand.

Brock Purdy is a very good QB that led the team to the NFC championship game. He's the starter.

Darnold is a young, former #3 pick with talent and 55 starts under his belt. He's a more dependable backup at this point due to his experience.

Lance has thrown 57 passes in his career and is a barely 23 year old developmental QB. He needs to be on a team where he can get experience.

I forgot who it was, but I read someone describe him pretty perfectly.

He’s athletic, but so stiff that it doesn’t matter. Strong arm but doesn’t know how to lead a receiver, he throws directly at the receiver most of the time. The problem even with that is he’s not accurate enough to throw to a wide open receiver.

He went on and on about how horrific a prospect he was. He was dead on. He was a 3rd round QB that got waived after only one year a reason haha.

Pretty much a no brainer. DTR is already clearly so far ahead of him, so it would be pointless to keep both. Plus Mond is just one of those guys where you really dont need to see much of him to know its never going to happen (at least on a starter level). All of the most important skill sets in a QB, he lacks in.

Decision making: horrible
Accuracy: really bad
pocket awareness: non existent

hell even when it comes to his athleticism. May have good top end speed for a QB. But bad acceleration and zero wiggle/agility to him. Reminds me of another QB that was drafted in the middle rounds by the same team...

IMO there's even more obviousness to it than that:

Lance has a different skill set (running) than most QBs do. Lance as your starter is fine because you build your offense around the strengths of your starter. Lance as your backup is fine as long as at least one of the following things is true:
a) He's backing up an older veteran
b) He's backing up a QB that would be running a similar offense

At this point... it's neither. Purdy's a pocket passer AND young (ironically he's 6 months older than Lance). If Purdy is your longterm starter (and why wouldn't he be right now?) it's hard to justify keeping a player as a backup that would need a different scheme to be effective. Then you add on (as you said) the fact that he's still a developmental QB and the choice is really obvious.

To me this says a lot more about how the franchise values Purdy than how it values Lance. If Purdy had come in last year and been mediocre or Nate Paterman bad then Lance is probably starting with the 49ers willing to trade risk for upside. But if they feel they have that upside locked up in Purdy why take any of the risk?

The other part of it is that Shanahan doesn't run an RPO-centric offense.

I guess he would have had to change his offense if he was committed to Lance.

But last season, before he got injured, Shanahan wasn't letting him run those kinds of plays. Often didn't let him throw and had him run up the middle a few times.

Really a head-scratching play calling.

I don't think much can be said about the kind of offense SF ran for Lance last year, considering he played one monsoon game and then ran six plays in game 2 before being hurt for the season.

Very noisy packed house for the Chiefs last preseason game. Must be a nice feeling returning as the defending Super Bowl champions.

BoBo has been a star this preseason. Undrafted free agent. He's slow but an underrated route runner. The guy just gets open.

He looked pretty good in the Cowboy game as well.
