Again, a rupture is a tear. An achilles rupture is a torn achilles. They are not different.
If it's a partial tear, the recovery time can be expected to be around 3 months (murkier given his age).
Given what we've heard, however, and how "it doesn't look good," it's likely they administered a Thompson test in the locker room. You more or less lay on your stomach with your ankle hanging off the table and squeeze the calf muscle. Upon squeezing, if the achilles is still connected, there would be movement in the ankle. If there is no connectivity, there is no movement. Given there was no MRI and that it doesn't look good, it's a pretty fair assumption that there was no movement, thus an assumed full tear in the achilles.
