Keep and extend the players or take the picks?

Post#1 » by JennetteMcCurdy » Mon May 13, 2024 6:45 pm

I’ll try to keep this as simple as possible, as I piece together what perceived value of the three players are.

Would you rather keep Cade, Ivey and Duren and pay them, or have………

2024 pick 4 from San Antonio
2024 pick 8 from San Antonio
2025 Atlanta’s first round pick
2025 mid first round pick
2026 San Antonio’s first round pick
2026 mid first round pick

That’s an estimate of what those three might fetch (plus expirings perhaps). No need to get too caught up in that - the concept is where I’m going here.

Basically - keep the three, pay them and plow forward, or trade them, load up on picks, and build it that way?

I said keep them, but it isn’t simple. I’m convinced Cade is legit, even w the max. I assume he was bringing back 3 or 4 of the draft picks.

So is Ivey and Duren bringing back 2025, 2026 mid round picks? For them I would wait another year and see how they develop.

Fortunately, the pistons don't need to make a black and white decision. Keep cade. Wait on Duren. Trade Ivey if you can get value.

So choosing between the two, you’re keeping them. All good, thanks.

I'm not trading Cade at this point, so if it's all or nothing, nothing for me.

Over the years, the Weaver sympathizers have always talked about how he inherited no tradable assets. In the scenario above, we would have nine first round picks (including our own), including three top eight picks this season.

My suspicion is that everyone’s sick and tired of rebuilding. Lol - I get it. But my fear of riding with the three (or most any middle ground) is that the result caps out at 35-40 wins.

If the new guy comes in and fires Weaver, I think it’s going towards blow up mode…….

I wouldn't do it as written. I'd move Cade and Duren and then try to rehab Ivey's value for half a season with the ball in his hands to eek out a better return from him. He still averaged 19/4/5 in Cade's 20 games missed even with Monty hesitant to give him the ball. You fix that from day 1 and I think he could fetch a decent return before the deadline.

With Cade and Duren I think it's selling fairly high now, so I'm fine with that.

My thinking is we need to get Cade a running mate. I don't see that person in Free Agency.

Trading is our only hope of bringing someone in here to help Cade.

We are handcuffed in trading picks. So if whoever we get in charge can't find that player to go alongside Cade I say we trade him before he wants out if he doesn't already. Only chance at getting something back of actual value. Last thing I want to do is trade him away but this whole thing is a mess.

Great talk, sport. Let’s try to move into adulthood now. Dismissed.
