4 Pistons on Bill Simmons Worst Contracts

Bill Simmons listed his 25 worst contracts

4 Pistons made the list

6. Ben Gordon 5/55
9. Rip Hamilton 4/48
15. Jason Maxiel 4/20
16. Charlie V 5/40

There is absolutely no way Ben Gordon should be on this list

and the fact that Simmons has CV's contract wrong raised red flags

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100208/two

-Also found this tidbit interesting
35. Chauncey Billups
Thirty years from now, when the Pistons have finished their 30th straight losing season and officially switched places with the Lions in the Detroit landscape, someone will write a "Curse of Chauncey" book for which Joe Dumars will refuse to be interviewed.

If he's basing it on this year's production, then BG is one of the worst contracts in the NBA given the amount and length.

Hopefully BG will be a lot better next season.

That list is ridiculous. But it's Bill Simmons, and as such is nothing to get worked up about.

I consider Rip's contract to be far worse than BG's, since Gordon is so young and when healthy can manage the same production.

Jeez, I could almost take him serious except....

Kevin Martin (30): My favorite possibly available trade piece -- great contract, proven scorer, high hoops IQ, someone who'd thrive on a veteran team that protected him defensively and ran plays for him. Right now he's playing on a glorified pickup team with Tyreke Evans, who thinks "point guard" means "I get to dribble over midcourt." Not gonna fly. Someone like Martin is a luxury. You pamper him. You set him screens. You hook him up on slash-and-kicks. You go to him after games and say, "Hey, what's the best place to deliver the ball for you -- chest high and a little to the right?" He could absolutely be a contender's No. 1 scoring option like Reggie Miller or Rip Hamilton once upon a time. Stay tuned.

Wait wait, a guy who is VERY much like Ben Gordon, in fact statistically very similar, contract wise his is even bigger, and he gets a pass because he is on a bad team? Wait wasn't he hurt this year too? Oh right, but why allow logic to dictate anything.

Let me go to thinking Gordon is garbage. **Puts head back in sand**

Oh, and per rotoworld:

Martin's contract
2009/10: $10,180,170
2010/11: $11,100,005
2011/12: $12,019,840
2012/13: $12,929,675

Simmons on Gordon in May 2009 before he joined the Pistons:

All I know is this: Only a few current players can win two games per playoff series by themselves, and he's one of them. If the goal is to win the title and not just compete for one, then I want Ben Gordon on my team. It's as simple as that. My father has been attending Boston playoff games since 1974 and ranked Gordon's Game 2 performance up there with the best of Toney, Microwave and Nick Weatherspoon -- probably the Mount Rushmore of "Streaky Scorers Who Annihilated the Celtics In a Playoff Series" -- saying simply, "We just couldn't stop him." And we couldn't.

Simmons in Nov '08 on Charlie

Charlie Villanueva
Headed for a 16-10, 40 percent from 3-point territory and a ton of minutes. My single favorite "Guy with sixth-round value you can get in the 10th round."

So he liked both of them at one point in time, now he slides the old "$90 mil on two bench guys" into every joke....two bench guys he'd kill to have on his beloved Celtics but because Joe D. got them it's an easy punchline.

Signing Gordon to that contract with Rip on the team made it a bad contract because it's $55M over five for a back-up 2-guard.

BG and Chuck bein on that list is comical. Rip is only on there because of his age (although thats a big factor).

Maxiell on the other hand deserves to be on that list.

Rip is on there because nobody wants him because of his contract. That's a really good sign that he has a bad contract. Detroit is stuck with him for the next two seasons, and over that time Stuckey will be re-signed meaning we'll have $30M+ in our shooting guards.

^^ I know you don't like him but the ratio of Rip's talent/production is pretty close to his annual contract number.

Bad contracts are talked about a lot here. I can understand it to some degree, but it seems to be emphasized too much. Cap space allows you to overpay free agents--they get overpaid more often than not). It's an endless cycle, except for a few lucky teams: shed bad contracts/sign free agents/find team burdened with bad contracts/shed bad contracts . . .

What he said.

What I always love is that he's going on about how Detroit is going to lose 30 straight seasons (an obvious exaggeration) when his beloved Celtics championship drought was much longer than the Pistons.

So no one thinks Ben and Charlie are bad contracts? Time to wake up. They have killed any chance this team had of being good.

If you spend that kind of space in the offseaso on 2 players and neither player is an obvious starter...you created 2 bad contracts.

EDIT: and for the record I think Bill Simmons is a complete tool.

Gordon definitely is a starter. No question about that.

Villanueva might not be a starter, but then again he ain't making starter money, either.

BG was averaging about 25 a game very efficiently for the first few weeks of the season.

He was looking like he was well worth his contract.

Since then he hasn't produced much at all.. and has played poorly... so he's been grossly overpaid for what he's been producing for us this season.

ben gordon is also a notoriously streaky player. when he's good, sure, he's worth the money.

when hes not, he not only isnt worth the money, but he kills your team.

right now we seem to have done really well getting the least out of him, and unless we can dump rip somehow, it seems likely that will continue.

some people act like things are going perfectly for the pistons. if the contracts are so great, and the players are so great, why is this team so horrible?

i dont like simmons either (nice catches on his flip flopping), but dont shoot the messenger on this one. we've got alot of poorly invested money. of those 4 contracts, if the league offered a one time absolving of any or all of them, that we wouldnt jump at the chance at wiping all 4 off? well, joe probably wouldnt, but i know i would.

I agree completely... if we could either have $40 million in cap room this summer, or BG, RIP, Prince, CV....

I don't know who here could say they're rather have our guys than $40 million to spend.
