Think about the Dubs paying Klay $20M/yr plus the lux tax on that. That would be pure insanity.

If they let CP3 walk there is basically no luxury tax.

I understand addition by subtraction, but imagine if they had traded Poole right after the chip for someone/something actually valuable? That said, gaining cap relief is better than signing the wrong player(s) for the wrong $$$. Which returns us to the discussion on Klay.

What would they have received for Poole before he got his extension?

MDJ would have been better off trading Poole after he got the bag for a couple of roll players, not giving Draymond an extension and letting Klay walk this offseason. The team would have been a year into a new direction instead of flaming out as an old 10th seed.

After the extension they had no realistic way to trade Poole until the end of the 2023 season. By then, we’re decent role players available?

I also think they should have dealt him right after the chip. It would have required him reaching an understanding with the new team on an extension, but that stuff happens all the time.
