They went to the NBA.com stats page, went to shots dashboard, saw that JB was hitting 29% on WIDE OPEN (6+ ft nearest defender) from 3, and eschewed any type of real logic and said "lets hinge our gameplan on that". Nevermind that he's averaging only 1 per game, nevermind that nearly 30% of them were with the shot clock winding down, or that almost 15% were from well beyond the arc (heat checks/desperate shots). They used a limited understanding of limited data and made a big gameplan change 15 minutes before tipoff

That is general board level analysis. And that's how either the Warriors analytics department works, or how educated the coaching staff is on them. Top 5 coach indeed..

If this was the reasoning for the strategy, which seems likely... its a bit mind-boggling because that same data to me would scream "you just need to guard Brown close and force him left". The vast majority of his shots are "open" and they are the ones he hits at a solid clip. Its when he's guarded closely that he misses, as well as those wide open ones you already mentioned. So to me it seems pretty obvious you get someone like GP2 and stay ATTACHED, force him left and live with the results. There is also no benefit of Dray being in "help" like Kerr said, because Brown wide open is just going to get the pass and take the shot... no action is now going to go to where Dray is helping.

Is Boston better? Of course. But to say we can't match up with them straight up is also a bold coaching decision. You can put Dray on Horford. JK on Tatum, Moody on White, GP2 on Brown, Steph on Jrue. Can even throw Klay on Jrue and Steph on White, Moody on Brown if starting Klay. If you have those matchups and you play with more physicality and effort you have a chance as David vs Goliath with them... but if you just give them open shots they can hit there isn't a chance.

I'm not too bothered, they lived and learned. But still a strange approach.

Aside from the last sentence - very bothered over here - agree entirely. It was a massive scheme change 15 minutes before tipoff with almost no consideration about the downstream effects.. like you said, if the goal is to get JB to shoot, why would putting Draymond on JB make any sense? If anyone, you put JK on him, because JK's the best offensive rebounder (IE - rebounder without getting a body on someone) on the team. Put Dray on Tatum or someone where his impact would still matter

Just a truly terrible coaching decision.. funny that a lot of fans (not here) were putting it on Draymond, like it was Dray's choice against the will of the coaches
