"I know Vic and his staff will maximize this player, and that’s what’s exciting about it,” Pace said after the first round concluded. “Vic’s been around a lot of good linebacker play, and this just adds to the great linebacker play the Bears have had as well.”

Pace called Fangio’s input “very important” on Smith.

“This is obviously one of Vic’s top players, [and] one of Matt’s top players, my top player,” Pace said. “We might have 10, 12, 15 grades on a guy, and it’s so comforting for me when I can look at that bandwidth of grades and they’re all right next to each other.

“That’s definitely how Roquan was, so it makes the pick really easy when we’re all unified like that.”

Smith fits Fangio’s mold for inside linebackers. At 6-1, 236 pounds, he’s built similarly to former 49ers star Patrick Willis (6-1, 240). And that’s just the start.

With the way the draft played out I'm happy with the pick. He reminds me a lot of the Falcons MLB but bigger and stronger.

Pretty much agree. I'd have more questions if they had drafted Fitzpatrick, Davenport, Edmunds, etc. Smith seems like solid choice given the other options.
TGibson (1/28/17); "..."a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10 for drama"...What's the worst? "...yelling matches with Thibs, everybody is just going crazy and I'm just sitting there...like, 'Don't call my name please..."

Outside of Chubb and Ward, he's the most complete defender in the draft. And he's the ideal ILB for today's NFL. Speed speed speed

Good to come here to balance the otherwise unanimous positive reviews on Smith.

Smith's size is just fine for the position (same as Trevathan and a bit taller than Jerrell Freeman) and his speed, instincts and character are way high end. The guy's a stud.

Fleet's lowlights video has the same problem as highlights videos. As for the knock that Smith can't get off blocks, the same criticism was voiced about Urlacher for years. I don't believe that it made his plaque in Canton.

I don't watch tens of hours of film on college players. Of all the experts I trust who do, they all love Smith.

IMO, it was a very good pick, but a very easy pick. The way the draft played out, I don't believe that they could have done any better.

Telvin Smith is 15-20lbs lighter than Roquan... He goes backwards at the point of attack....but like Roquan, Telvin gets off the block....and Telvin is a Pro Bowl LB.

Pace said that he didn't want Roquan "bulking up" at all. He wanted him to stay around the same size in order to play at the same speed. His only knock was that he can get "eaten up" by blockers, but 95% of the time his speed and instincts get him to the ball before that can happen.

Pretty much everyone that knows anything about football on the professional level is raving about this pick by the Bears.

I liked it from the start, and hearing all that makes me like it even more.

Thanks for sharing. No wonder Fangio is a fan.

“You hear that a lot here and there, but if you look at the top linebackers in the NFL right now, the guys that around a height of 6-1 which I am and around a weight of 235,” Smith said. “I don’t view myself as undersized. I know what I bring to the table.”

Smith has clearly done his research. Among Bleacher Report’s NFL 1000 rankings of the top 10 inside linebackers from 2017, only three — Carolina’s Luke Kuechly, Baltimore’s C.J. Mosley and Cleveland’s Jamie Collins — are both taller and heavier than Smith. Guys like Minnesota’s Eric Kendricks (6-foot, 232 pounds) and Atlanta’s Deion Jones (6-foot-1, 222 pounds) provide tantalizing profiles, at least in terms of build, for Smith.

And Danny Trevathan, who Smith will presumably be playing alongside in 2018, is 6-foot-1, 239 pounds. The point: Being “undersized” isn’t a deterrent to success in today’s NFL — especially when a player has the sideline-to-sideline speed possessed by Smith.

Love this pick. This is the type of LB you need in todays NFL, with these weird spread college like spread schemes beginning to gain steam. Might have to kind up a position for him. IDK if he's natural at ILB, but you definitely know you're getting someone that's gonna diagnose the offense quickly and not make many mistakes
