Thought I should make a thread about what's going on with Fangio

Packers and Raven have gotten DCs so we can take them off the list of threats

He’s obviously talking to other teams. It’s probably not just about the money for him

I doubt he's mad over that. I think he's smart enough to know that older lifetime defensive guys rarely become head coaches in todays game. Nobody else is beating his door down to hire them as their head coach.

It was rumored he did ask was his head coach interview just a courtesy.

I don't see him leaving. The remaining options for defensive coordinators like the Giants, and Colts have to pretty much rebuild on defense. Also at 60 years old, I really doubt he's trying to relocate from a destination city in Chicago and do it all over again.

If he leaves then he and Pace really must have had a strong disagreement, but bring on Betcher for a year if they can get him before he gets his head coach job.

I can deal with this. Fangio was rumored to want to go to somewhere warm. Bettcher is a really hot name and Arizona's defense has been quite good for his tenure.

Bettcher seems to be a good plan B if Fangio is set on leaving.

Bettcher is in play for the HC position in Ariz. He is Arains recommended replacement and he still has a year left on his contract. I think this another one of Pace's diversionary tactics.

All I know about Bettcher is he rose in the coaching ranks pretty quickly and his players in Arizona are ridiculously talented. I'm sure it'll be a bit of an adjustment because there is a clear downgrade in our defensive talent compared to what Arizona has had for the last several years

DL, I'd say we're clearly better. LB were definitely worse as Jones, Reddick, Bucannon, and Dansby is very good quartet. Secondary they have Peterson as a clear star, but I'd kind of put it as a push. So not as good, but not a huge step down either. One thing in Betcher's favor is he realized Cooper sucked at CB.

From Biggs' article:

"Fangio returned from the West Coast early Wednesday and was in discussions with the team that day. The sides continued to talk, and an agreement was reached Friday, giving the Bears a full set of coordinators after Nagy previously hired Mark Helfrich for offense and Chris Tabor for special teams."

You got there before me, Susan, but this is great news.

This coaching staff seems to be so strong (and I don't think we'll see Fangio run away to another team to become a HC anytime soon).

Pace seems to know exactly what he wants and was able to make it happen. Both him and Nagy seem to be 100% lockstep right now, so we'll see if they're both just insanely confident or really freaking get it.

I've been watching the Bears since '63. With few exceptions (e.g., Jim Finks), Bears management have always seemed to be a step behind the competition. Kudos to Ryan Pace...he's been a step ahead throughout the Fox-Nagy transition.

Gotta give credit to Pace and Nagy here. This staff looks strong on paper. We get to keep our defensive continuity and reinvent offense with strong minds.

Now Pace just needs to fill out the holes on this roster and have a strong draft.

Tyrann Mathieu, Budda Baker, Calais Campbell (all pro this year with JAX), just to name a few who were clearly very very talented.

But I will give him credit for developing Tony Jefferson, who was a late round pick.

Very exciting news! I've always thought Fangio is one of the top 5 best DCs year in and year out. Hopefully we get him a couple more pieces and he takes the defense to top 5 level.
