2007 Draft

Post#1 » by GYBE » Tue Jun 5, 2007 11:39 pm

The Cubs have the 3rd pick in this years draft, so we should get a really great prospect. Trouble is, I've never followed the draft before and have no idea who any of the prospects are. Does anyone have an idea of a couple guys we might be looking at, and give a little mini-scouting report on them? I'd be interested to see what kind of guys we might see in the majors a few years from now.

Vitters will most likely be the pick.

High school kid out of California - 3rd baseman.

Okay, I just did some quick research. I've never seen any of these kids play, but I like the sound of C Matt Wieters. Easily the best positional college player, has a good all-around game and could be our catcher pretty quickly. Who knows how long Barrett has with the team.

Vitters has a sweet looking swing but doesn't have the results I'd expect of that high a pick.

Suppoedly with the ownership controversy we can't go over slot money, so don't expect Wieters even though he makes some sense. It will almost surely be either Vitters or Jarrod Parker from IN, most likely Vitters. He compares to a Chipper Jones/Ryan Braun type of line drive hitter with some pop, with average D at 3rd. Parker is intruiging as he's only 6'1 but has a consistent 95 mph fastball that tops out at 99. Above average slider as well, and working on his change. Probably 70/30 chance it's Vitters.

I've been following all of the prospects since we started sucking last year, so ask me any questions if you want.

This is probably a dumb question but what the hell is slot money?

I have done a little reading on some of prospects and like Vitters. But have heard Moustakas is better.

Also, do the Cubs have any interest in Porcello? He looks nice as well.

Apparently Porcello may be gone at #2. Between him and Wieters for KC. I think the Cubs should take whoever of those two falls, but apparently that won't be the case.

I'm guessing "slot money" the normal average salary for that position. Some prospects get aggressive agents who demand more (like how Prior was passed over in 2001 at #1 because Minny couldn't pay his demands). Ss I'd take it as Wieters wanting more than the Cubs will offer their pick.

I just get the feeling we're going to miss in this draft whoever we take.

I would want Porcello personally.

But I think we will end up with Parker and his arm will blow up.

Or Vitters who will never develop his power and turn into just a good minor league player.

We BETTER get an impact player from this draft.. I don't really care who it is or what position.

I really think Wieters is a can't miss guy, should be a great on offense and defense. Great character guy too. Seems like the surest thing for us. Barrett is a FA at the end of the year and Wieters will only need a year in the minors. The team will regret passing on him.

Bit of a shock, Mike Moustakas taken #2. Wasn't ranked by most as even the best high school bat. Leaves Porcello and Wieters for us.

And the Cubs take Vitters, as a groan from the crowd is let out.
