Phil Hughes update (good news!)

Hughes threw his first BP session today and another one is scheduled for later this week. And then, FINALLY, he will make his first rehab start on Monday. Looks like we will have him back in pinstripes for 2 full months. Excellent news.

The Yanks have 5 more games left *2 more wit da Twins, and a 3 game series wit da Angels* at home.

I expect them to win atleast 3 games if not more.

I'm sure they're just taking it easy for his first start. He probably threw a bunch of pitches with the 2 walks and 3 k's. They will stretch him out to 4 or 5 innings in his next start.

You guys have to realize that you can't just simply throw Hughes back in the fire. The guy has pitched over 80 innings in a season ONCE in his entire life, and he hadn't pitched anything more than a bullpen session since early May...that is two FULL months. It's 2 innings his first start, maybe 4 his second start, then 5-6 his third start, then he will be let loose. This isn't a guy who has 8 seasons on his arm and once he is healthy is ready to throw 100 pitches. He isn't being babied, he is being handled properly. If you want him to throw 120 pitches every time out, then have fun owning Mark Prior V.2. This is how you handle young pitchers, if it prevents him from reaching his potential until a year later, then so be it. I'd rather that happen then he NEVER reaches his potential because of injuries.

We can always do what the Twins did with Liriano last year. Once he is healthy throw him back out there for 7 innings. How did that work? Lost him for 2006, 2007, and may never be the same in 2008 and beyond.

I'll wait for the AP press release on this start, but the line looks good. Hopefully he makes his start on Saturday at Trenton because I'll be there.

Here is a quote from Peter Abraham, it's all you need to know:

Phil Hughes pitched in his first game since May 1 tonight when be faced the Dunedin Blue Jays at Legends Field.

He went two innings, allowing one unearned run and no hits. He walked two, struck out three. Hughes retired five of the last batters he faced, three on strikeouts.

I have not received word on when Hughes will pitch again. But figure on it being this weekend for Trenton, probably for four innings. The Yankees will proceed cautiously with him to make sure he is OK.

UPDATE, 8:52 p.m.: The Yankees PR machine is reporting that Hughes threw 36 pitches, 20 for strikes. That makes sense. They would want him to go up 15 or 20 each time.

So 55-60 for Trenton

Then 75-80 for Scranton

Then 95-100 for the Yankees.

I would expect the AP to move some quotes later on. I
