Down on the Farm/Mets Minor League Discussion

Post#1 » by majorleads » Mon Apr 2, 2007 4:27 am

A place to talk about the goings on...down on the farm

AAA New Orleans Zephyrs
AA Binghamton Mets
A St.Lucie Mets
Low A Savannah Sand Gnats
Short Season Brooklyn Cyclones
Rookie Ball Gulf Coast League Mets
Rookie Ball Kingsport Mets
Rookie Ball Venezuelan Summer League

From Baseball America...
No team cruised to the postseason more easily then the Mets in 2006, who did so with a team built through a variety of ways. There were free agents (Carlos Beltran, Billy Wagner), homegrown talent (Jose Reyes, David Wright) and trade acquisitions (Carlos Delgado, Paul Lo Duca, John Maine). A late-season injury to one of their biggest free-agent signings, Pedro Martinez, undermined New York in October. After winning 97 regular-season games and sweeping the Dodgers in the Division Series, the Mets fell to the Cardinals in a memorable seven-game Championship Series.

Though the season's finish was disappointing, New York should be in position to contend for several years. The Mets did their best to ensure that in August, when they locked up both Reyes and Wright beyond their arbitration years for a combined $88.25 million. Reyes is signed through 2010 with an option for 2011 and Wright through 2012 with a 2013 option. Combined with Carlos Beltran, who's signed through 2011 and has yet to turn 30, the Mets will continue to have one of the game's best position-player cores for years. All three finished in the top 10 in the National League MVP voting.

The Mets are one of the biggest spenders in baseball and should be able to fill in most of their major holes on the free-agent market. They plugged their hole in left field by signing Moises Alou. But their farm system has improved to the point where they have players at the upper levels ready to make an impact.

Mike Pelfrey and Philip Humber, their first-rounders from 2005 and 2004 appear poised to break into the big league rotation at some point in 2007 and could be its anchors for years to come. Lastings Milledge (who just missed qualifying for this list) and Carlos Gomez may factor into the outfield as well.

General manager Omar Minaya is always willing to trade prospects for big leaguers, too. He parted with three of his best prospects (righthanders Gaby Hernandez and Yusmeiro Petit, plus first baseman Mike Jacobs) last season to get Delgado and Lo Duca in separate deals with the Marlins. This winter, he dangled Milledge in front of the Athletics in an attempt to bolster New York's rotation.

In recent years, the Mets have done an outstanding job of signing high-ceiling talent. Their drafts haven't been especially deep, in part because they've forfeited eight premium picks in the last five years as free agent compensation, but since 2001 they've signed Aaron Heilman, Wright, Scott Kazmir, Milledge, Humber and Pelfrey as first-round or supplemental first-round picks.

A former Mets international scouting director, Minaya also has re-emphasized his club's efforts on the worldwide market since becoming GM in September 2004. New York invested a combined $2.1 million on Dominican outfielder Fernando Martinez and Venezuelan righthander Deolis Guerra in 2005, and both had outstanding debuts in full-season leagues at age 17. The Mets dipped into the international well again last summer to sign Dominican catcher Francisco Pena, the son of former all-star Tony Pena, for $750,000.

In just two years at the helm, Minaya has turned the Mets from a punchline into one of the teams best equipped for the next half-decade. He has big league talent, minor league talent and a budget as large as anyone in the NL. Like the Mets' offense in 2006, it's a lethal combination.

While its hard to watch him do well, nothing is more heartbreaking then watching the future crumble before your eyes. When we had our Big Three in the wings... and what became.

That is true, however, the horrible Kazmir trade and all of the failures of the past has now resulted in an overhaul of the entire Mets scouting department which has brought us Omar Minaya.

Two notable ones that got their arms blown out by the Mets... Wilson was released by the Reds recently.

I've talked to a fellow Mets poster of mine who posts on Metsrefugees and MSG Forums to come and post on this site. This dude knows his stuff about the minors and 75% of his posts are updates about it. So if he comes here he'll be a huge plus to this soon to be big community.

FYI i said soon to be big because I spammed ESPN and MLB about the Mets forums. :)

As bad as Phillips was, it wasn't him that got rid Kazmir. It was that other clown, Jim Duquette.

Article

First Look: B-Mets

Double-A Binghamton broadcaster Rob Ford sends this preview of the B-Mets. Click the attachments below for the roster and detailed bios on each player.

Seven top prospects and 18 players with Double-A experience are part of the 2007 Binghamton Mets Opening Day roster released today by the New York Mets.

Seven of the 26 players starting the 2007 season in the Southern Tier are listed among the top 30 prospects in the Mets organization as determined by Baseball America. Three of those players are in the top 10, led by #2 Fernando Martinez, an outfielder who hit .279 in 2006, his first pro season. Martinez, 18, is slated to become the first teenager to play for the B-Mets since 19-year-old Jose Reyes in 2002.

Other highly-touted prospects include righthander Kevin Mulvey (#6), who posted a 1.35 ERA in three B-Mets starts last season, less than two months after being drafted in the second round. First baseman Mike Carp (#8) slugged 17 homers for High-A St. Lucie in 2006 while leading Mets farmhands with 88 RBI.

Of the 18 on the roster who have played at the Double-A level, 12 of them saw action with the B-Mets last season, including Owego native Ryan Cullen, a lefty who held opposing hitters to a .212 average in 35 relief appearances and infielder Brett Harper, who was hitting .338 before a shoulder injury sidelined him for the year.

Three players come to Binghamton with Major League experience. Righthanded reliever Marcos Carvajal spent all of 2005 with Colorado. Catcher Jose Reyes (no relation to the former B-Mets shortstop of the same name) was a September call-up with the Cubs last season. Infielder Mark Kiger made history last year by becoming the first player to make his Major League debut during the postseason, appearing in two ALCS games with Oakland.

The B-Mets will hold two preseason workouts at NYSEG Stadium

Wow, Fernando Martinez is already at AA. If he has a great season, we might see him in the majors before he turns 20. Second half of next season our outfield could be Martinez, Beltran and Gomez.

And if Beltran should happen to not take the bat off his shoulders come postseason, be might be the odd one out. Use his money and put it towards Johan Santana.

No thank you.

Where else can you find a gold gloving, silver slugging CF who is only 29. They dont grow on trees.

Just go after Santana, a lot of money will be cut off the cap anyway.

Beltran hit .296/.387/.667 with 3 HR in 27 AB in the NLCS last year.

Very good for guy who didn't take the bat off his shoulders.

Yeah - Major, I think you should drop it.

Good hitters take pitches. You've even said it was a nasty pitch.

We don't want Beltran over-swinging - he had the highest on base percentage of any met last year (because he keeps the bat on his shoulder). - it's frequently a good thing.

Ask David Wright to keep the bat on his shoulder once in a while - he struck out over 100 times last year.

We're talking bases loaded 2 outs bottom of the 9th trailing 3-1 game 7 of the NLCS. You make 18 million dollars a season, your job is too get us into the World Series. Instead you go down feebly in 3 pitches. That is the situation where legends are made.

Anyway, I was more disappointed Cliffy didn't get the big hit that inning. Felt sooooo bad for the guy because he was gimpy and just couldn't go full bore. Damn shame cause if he was healthy we probably win that series in 5 games.

And Shawn Green has to goooooooo

now.
