Dropping down to #30 is way too far.

Mayhew also said former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, now a receiver and returner, will work out for the Lions before the draft."He's doing a better job now catching punts," Mayhew said. "He's moving along in the right direction as far as developing his skills to be a returner. He's also got some ability to play running back.

I'm still hoping for a DE at 5, but I think we will pull the trigger on a OT if we can. Considering we just took an OT in the first I'm a bit disappointed, but oh well, BPA all day is the Mayhew way

Hunt is my No. 1 DE and if Cornelius Carradine has a good pro day today he would be my No.2. I like big DE's with speed and strength. Fisher or Johnson with Hunt or Carradine would be great. Slay in the third would super. If they move down in the 1st round I would take Hunt and hope Carradine had a good pro day for my choice in the 2nd round. If Carradine is gone I would take Okafor or Werner. If we pick up another 2nd round pick I would draft Slay and in the 3rd a S.

Here's what I know:
Eric Fisher will be the pick if he's on the board. Period.
If Fisher is gone, they will choose between Ansah, Warmack, and Joeckel but that decision has not yet been made. Star Lotulelei has not been ruled out either.
They wouldn't mind trading back and getting Warmack or Tavon Austin
They are not nearly as interested in Dee Milliner as Mel Kiper would have you believe
They REALLY like the depth at wide receiver in the middle rounds
They are not opposed to taking a defensive tackle at 36 or 65.
The 7th round pick will be a QB if the right one is there, unfortunately my guy wouldn't tell me who it is. My guess is Nathan Stanley.

Here's what I think:
The Lions are praying both Fisher and Joeckel are gone because it creates trade desperation for Lane Johnson or DJ Fluker. They could move back to 7 or 10 or 12 and get extra picks and still get someone they value.

The 2nd round pick will either be a WR or a defensive lineman.
The 3rd round pick will either be OL or WR. I've heard Reid Fragel's name bandied about but I can't tell you if it's serious or not.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

Few things

I'd really hate taking Lotulelei for a couple of reasons. A. I don't think he has nearly the upside Sheldon Richardson has and I think Richardson is a better fit for our DL. B. I would hate taking a DT at 5 with how many other needs we have.

Are they not high on Dion Jordan or is it pretty much a lock he will be gone?

If they were to draft Tavon Austin, what would be the plan for him? Isn't he more of a slot guy? We have Bush who can line up in the slot and he is our "speed back". I love Austin game just not sure of the fit. I think Patterson would fit much better but not really a fan of taking a WR in Round 1. I think we have to go OL or DE.

Warmack would be fine but I think you can trade back and get him. I think the best thing would be Geno Smith falling and then a team like Buffalo (just guessing here) might want to move up for him. (to get in front of the Browns and Cards)

I'm not liking the idea of taking a DT at all, at least not until the later rounds. Any DT taken should be a depth guy to backup Suh/Fairley.

How many 7th round QB stick in the league? Its usually a better spot to take a flier on a ST guy.

I think OT is our best play if Joekel or Fisher are there.

I like Warmack too, just surprised the Lions are considering taking him. I thought we didn't value OGs in the 1st round.

I agree about Austin. Really like his upside, but not sure he's a good fit. We already have slot guys, we need a big WR to put opposite CJ. If we're taking a WR in the 1st, Patterson might be the better fit.

Agreed ... UNLESS (and this is a BIG "unless") the Lions think Suh can shift to DE, much like Reggie White did. I know they've moved him around the line in different formations before, but Jeff, do you have any inside info if this is their line of thinking? That if a guy like Star is the BPA they'll draft him and move Suh outside? Just purely speculating ...

Speaking of ST players in the 7th round (and I can't believe I'm actually about to ask this question!) — Jeff, is there any word on us drafting a punter? Seems like there are actually a couple of top prospects this year and I read we met with a number of them (Brad Wing of LSU kinda piqued my interest).

Not at No. 5. There's not a receiver worth taking that high. But at any point after that (including in a first-round trade-down), the Lions could go with a receiver.
The Lions hosted four receivers projected to go in the draft's first two rounds on pre-draft visits this year, and all fill the speed requirement.

The Lions have taken four receivers in Martin Mayhew’s four drafts as general manager. Here’s how they’ve fared in the NFL:

YR RD RECEIVER REC YDS NOW WITH
2009 3 Derrick Williams 9 82 Toronto (CFL)
2010 7 Tim Toone 0 0 Atlanta
2011 2 Titus Young 81 990 No team
2012 2 Ryan Broyles 22 310 Detroit

Top 5 WR prospects

1.
Tavon Austin, W. Virginia

2. Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee

3. Justin Hunter, Tennessee

4. Keenan Allen, Cal

5. DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson

Didn't Keenan Allen just run a horrid 40 time - perhaps at Cal's Pro day?

Margus Hunt looks interesting, really raw, but freak athlete and strong. i wouldn't mind him in the 2nd round if we went OL in the first

Free Press Article Margus Hunt On Track to Greatness

His feats in the weight room were legendary, a 6-foot-8 track star who could snatch 320 pounds and power clean a small car.

Every time football players saw Margus Hunt work out, they told the big Estonian he should switch sports, as if he had one to begin with.

A world junior champion in the shot put and discus, Hunt came to SMU in January of 2008 to train with legendary track coach Dave Wollman in the hope that the Mustangs would revive the men’s program that had been discontinued a few years earlier.

The Detroit Lions are trying to trade down.

Join the club.

A tweet by ESPN’s Adam Schefter this morning mentioned the Lions alongside the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins as teams with top-12 picks in Thursday’s NFL draft who are “making calls” in an effort to move down the draft order.

Interesting. Though I still do not see any player that teams want to jump up for. Geno Smith just doesn't look likely to get everyone all excited to me

i'm excited

IF Fisher and Joeckel are gone by #5, its going to mean that more teams are going to be desperate to move up for johnson. More than likely meaning we trade down

If Fisher and Joeckel are still there, we draft them and get a immediate impact player

this is why they are trading down they want a wide receiver.

Not at No. 5. There's not a receiver worth taking that high. But at any point after that (including in a first-round trade-down), the Lions could go with a receiver.
