OT: Should the Jets try for Alex Smith

Post#1 » by Brooklyn_Yards » Mon Feb 4, 2013 3:50 pm

San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Alex Smith will most likely not return to the team next season, reports NFL.com.

The report says that there are several teams interested in Smith, including the Arizona Cardinals, the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles. Smith is due a $8.5 million salary in 2013.

Smith was the league’s highest rated quarterback when he was injured on Nov. 11 against the St. Louis Rams. He was completing 70 percent of his passes and had 13 touchdowns before suffering a concussion. Backup Colin Kaepernick come on in relief and never relinquished the starting job, leading the team to Super Bowl XLVII against the Baltimore Ravens

Obviously we need a new QB, unless we draft an NFL ready QB one will likely come thru FA and/or trades.
Maybe some Revis and Tebow for Alex Smith. Revis wants to be paid and Tebow wants out. If we could pull it off would you want Smith?

Competition for him will be stiff, but I don't see where we have a choice. Mark Sanchez sucks and is not an NFL starting QB.

Won't happen. He's a Eagle if I've ever seen one. That city will love him.

What can the Eagles offer? I only follow 4 teams Giants, Jets, Bears, 49ers.

Revis on the Niners would be scary(assuming he's healthy)

They're restarting so I'm pretty sure everyone but Maclin (or DJax), Shady, and Trent Cole is up for grabs. They also have a top 5 pick.

Bad idea for both teams IMO. Especially for the Jets. You want picks for Revis. Same is true for 49ers.

Revis on that defense? They'll have 5 top 10 defender candidates (Willis, Bowman, Smith, Smith, Revis). They'll be unstoppable.

Personally I don't like this draft nearly as much as the last few. I wouldn't take a shot with a rookie over the best corner of the last 5 years (and the best corner since Deion).

Jets need a QB. Any rational person would see this is a great fit and try to work a deal to get this guy. However, Ryan loves him some Sanchise so IMO it is a long shot of a hope. What is more likely is someone who is good enough to start, but bad enough that Rex can lie to the public and say "Mark gives us the best chance to win"

Mark is our QB until his contract is over lol. Let him be a high paid 2nd/3rd stringer just dont start him.

Hell no, they gotta draft a QB. Smith is nothing special and you dont want to have some retreat like him or Matt Flynn lead your franchise. There is a reason there are not starting for their teams...

Yea, the guys in front of them are awesome...

I'm not high on trading for Smith, I wouldn't hate it, but I would MUCH prefer to work on the cap this year, find a west coast offense RB, draft some o-line depth, bite the bullet and suck for 2013 then draft our QB in next year's draft.

I*n Alex case, he didn't lose his job due to his performance on the field, he lost it due to Kap breaking out while he was injured.

I'd take that chance on Smith, but i doubt the Jets would invest starter money for two QB's

I'm pretty sure that our cap situation won't allow for it. We just don't have enough flexibility to make this move with the amount of holes we need to fill in the draft and the lack of money to spare.

Revis for Larry Fitzgerald . Alex smith should be unhappy enough that the jets could get him for peanuts.

Jets already have an elite QB in Tim Tebow.

Just an aside, the Jets were looking into JAMARCUS RUSSELL...That's the type of QB our cap allows for taking a shot on.
