With the 10th pick in the draft...Madison Bumgarner

Post#1 » by opzoneworld » Thu May 17, 2007 7:58 pm

From what I know of the Giants, they will probably go pitcher with 10 and then with their two picks in the 20's go hitter.

If it were me though, I would go all three 1st rounders hitters and then pick pitchers with the 3 sandwhich picks.

Two players that are moving up quickly are Mills (3B/1B) and LaPorta (1B). I am sure scouts would say 10 is slightly too high for either of these players but they are fighting to be the #2 ranked hitter in the draft. With the Giants not picking again until the 20's and their obvious power-hitting need, I would take one right here no matter what!

#10 I take Mills and cross my fingers/pray that LaPorta is still up there with their first 20th pick.

What do you guys think will happen? Or I guess does anyone care?

Good question! I picked hitter. My take on this draft is to go with a guy who has the "potential" to be similar to Ricky Henderson. One of my all time very best players, Ricky had the ability to change a game all by himself and often did. Of corse we're not going to get another Ricky but it helps when you start with speed-speed-speed.

We could, yes, but what good will it do if he gives up 0 ER's and can't pick up a win. We need a power bat out of this draft if nothing else.

RealGM released Mock Draft V.1 of the first round.

If the draft goes this way, I would be thrilled for the Giants! Sabean please take note of this. The power bats this organization needs are there for the taking. Here is how they have the Giants:

10. San Francisco Giants: Beau Mills, 1B/3B, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)
Mills has led Lewis-Clark State in the NAIA with a .459 average with 33 home runs and 113 in just 57 games this season.

22. San Francisco Giants: Kyle Russell, OF, Texas
Russell is leading the Longhorns at the plate with a .348 average and 27 home runs, crushing the single season school record for home runs, and has also added 58 RBI.

29. San Francisco Giants: Drew Cumberland, SS, Pace HS (Florida)
Cumberland is one of my favorite players in this draft and is hitting .449 with 15 stolen bases for Pace High School this season.

I am only praying for one small change. The draft has at #21
21. Toronto Blue Jays: Matt LaPorta, 1B, Florida
LaPorta is batting .419 with 19 home runs and a .838 slugging percentage in 49 games for the Gators. He is also a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy for the top player in college baseball.

I pray he is there at 22 for us and then we can get Russell at 29. That would be my "wet-dream" draft. I want Mills and LaPorta badly!

Go Giants!

Our lower farm system is actually pretty good. Its the players that should be making the majors this year that stink because we didn't have a pick in the first three rounds for a couple of years. Last year and this year should really restock our system with good, young players.

Matt Latos and Max Scherzer are out of the picture as they both just signed at the last minute.

I don't understand why teams draft by position in the draft. It's really dumb.

If Rick Porcello falls, draft him.

I think Porcello is going #2 to KC, so its unrealistic.

It seems like Mills to the Giants at #10 is a lock unless Parker falls to them, and that could happen.

I could see them taking pitchers with their other 2 first round picks.

I believe, or perhaps hope is a better word, they will go:

#10 Beau Mills 3B. Giants have 3 needs: power bat, 3b, 1b. Mills fills two of them. 2nd best power bat in college and happens to play 3rd. Could make the big club within 2 years. Cant complain at that.

#22 Matt LaPorta 1B. The 3rd best college power bat in the draft and he happens to play 1B, another major need spot. Mills and LaPorta would sure up the corner infield for many years for the Giants and go well with the speed they drafted last year at 2nd and ss.

# 29 Casey Weathers RHP. The best college closer in the draft. Because of his exp, he could make the big club by September callups if the Giants wanted. No secret they need a closer and this kid has been lights out at Vandy.

I think Mills will end up at 1B.

The MLB Draft isn't about needs, its about the best player available.

I'm iffy on taking a closer in the first round but it does look like Weathers is a target of the Giants.

I agree it is not about need as in, I need a 1b so I am drafting a 1b. What I am saying is that it just so happens this year that the Giants biggest needs (power hitter, 1b, 3b) quite possibly are the best players available. Almost as if a sign from above. :P

LaPorta is not too good on D so he will be better suited for 1b. Mills is average and so can be 3b. He will need work but he should be able to do it. I like the closer idea. I dont mind grooming someone specific for that role. But that is just my two cents.

I'd also put Mills at First base, because we have Villalona coming up at third base.

Boras has about 10 potential first rounders. Let's see if Sabean dodges these guys.

Matt Wieters C
Rick Porcello RHP
Mike Moustakas 3B/C
Matt Harvey RHP
Andrew Brackman RHP
Matt LaPorta 1B
Josh Fields RHP
Jake Arrietta RHP
Kentrail Davis OF

I think he dodges Porcello and Wieters for sure. Moustakas would be interesting at 10 and I think Moustakas is a 3B or LF in the bigs. Harvey would be kind of high at 10 and he won't be there at 22. I don't like Brackman at all. Kentrail Davis could be had in the supplemental part imo, don't know if the Giants are interested.
