Around the NFL

Thought we could use a thread to discuss all of the non-Skins news around the league. How about this for starters:

To clear salary-cap space and lock up their franchise quarterback, the Dallas Cowboys and Tony Romo reached an agreement on a blockbuster six-year extension worth $108 million, making him the highest paid player in franchise history.

In the first year of the extension, Romo will make $26.5 million, and after two years, he will make $40 million. Romo's money over the first three years -- with the likelihood that Dallas keeps him the next three seasons -- will be $57 million.

Apparently, this really helps their cap this year but still. This dude has 1 playoff win in his career, and now he has more guaranteed money in his deal than SB MVP Joe Flacco? Wow...

Of course, from a Skins perspective, I absolutely LOVE this deal. Pretty much takes them out of the running for the division for the next 6 years. LOL

And then what's up with the Raiders? They give up 2 firsts for Carson Palmer, have zero success to show for it, and after a year and a half they are about to dump him so they can give up MORE picks to get the still unproven Matt Flynn?

The ghost of Al Davis lives!

More QB news:

The Buffalo Bills have agreed to a two-year deal worth a maximum of $13 million with quarterback Kevin Kolb, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Saturday night.

<snip>

Tarvaris Jackson, re-signed to a one-year contract earlier this offseason, had been the only experienced quarterback on Buffalo's roster.

My intiall reaction was WTF? But I guess it's not too much if he's going to start, and also considering that their only other option was T-Jack. Still, now is the time to be a QB in the NFL because you can suck and still get paid. I'm actually curious what this might mean for Rex Grossman, who's career is winding down but is healthy and still has an arm.

Wow, looks like Asomugha's deal is actually cheaper than D.Hall's. Might end up being one of the best values this season.

Jason LaCanfora gives his take on the worst contracts in the NFL:

Two things jumped out at me:

1. Why isn't Joe Flacco on this list?
2. Isn't it awesome that no Redskins show up on a list like this? :D

Wow - Tebow to New England. Wasn't expecting that. Already talk he may switch to tight end. I could also see him just being a plain old running back (like a souped up Danny Woodhead).

But being reunited with Josh McDaniels and getting mentored by Brady is probably his best chance of continuing to develop as a QB. Should be interesting to see what happens.

Veteran backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels, who was cut by the Minnesota Vikings before last season, announced his retirement Sunday on his Facebook page.

He said he will soon file his paperwork with the NFL to make his retirement official.

Shout out to former-Redskin (although the article doesn't mention it) Sage Rosenfels. Always thought he was decent in preseason for us and was happy to see him get a chance elsewhere. I recall him putting up some decent fantasy numbers during a few games a couple years ago. Helped me along the way towards a win in that league IIRC.

Happy trails, Sage!

No matter who your favorite team is, it's always tough to see the guys who get lost for the season within the first few days of camp:

Jeremy Maclin (ACL) - Eagles lose a primary weapon.
Aaron Berry (ACL) - Was supposed to be in NYJ's CB rotation.
Dan Koppen (ACL) - The second starting C that DEN lost this offseason.
Dennis Pitta (Hip) - Flacco loses his safety valve.

Man, the Steelers are going to be bad this year.

The AFC as a whole is going to be extremely weak. NY Jets/Steelers/Ravens/Chargers/Raiders/Bills/Browns are all going to be trash. That's half the conference.

I also wasn't impressed with the Cowboys or Giants last night. Barring an unhealthy year, the Redskins should be the favorites to win the division. But at the same time, the schedule is pretty tough. Packers next week.

Yeah, but the top of the conference is really strong. And some supposedly bad teams have surprised a bit. I'd definitely say AFC is looking like the better conference this year so far.

Gotta think that Tampa is kicking themselves after seeing 2 starting QBs go down RIGHT AFTER they just cut Josh Freeman. Sure, Freeman's no great shakes. But even a conditional 7th is better than nothing.

Tampa's coach seems a tad too stubborn to be kicking himself.

Wow, one tie yesterday and another almost-tie. Interesting to see the new rules at work in spotlight games.

Kubiak fired. Not unexpected, but Houston will need a QB going forward. Thoughts on what we could get from them for Kirk Cousins?

Picks obviously, but maybe we can also get Andre Johnson on a restructured deal with our cap space? At this point in his career, he'd be interesting as a 2nd option and veteran leader for a year or two.

Wow, next Sunday shaping up to have meaningful games all day. Not sure I can remember such an interesting week 17.

This Sunday may actually be the closest I ever come to rooting for Dallas. The thought of Orton leading them to the playoffs instead of Tony "anti-clutch" Romo would be hilarious. :D

The perfect end to a season? Orton channeling his inner Romo!

Wow, Bowman might be done. That was pretty nasty. Had to turn away after the first replay.
