Re: Bynum Injury Updates: likely to play thursday?. p. 13

Inside The Lakers: After today’s practice went well, Andrew Bynum said he plans to play Sunday against the Memphis Grizzlies and April 14 against the Utah Jazz. Those are the Lakers’ final regular-season games. Bynum has said all along that he hoped to play in a couple of regular-season games before rejoining the active roster for the playoffs.

Bynum has been sidelined since tearing the MCL in his right knee Jan. 31 against Memphis. He suffered a season-ending left kneecap injury Jan. 13, 2008 against Memphis. So a return against Memphis on Sunday seemed like the right time to come back to the court.

“I just have to get my timing back,” said Bynum, who did not travel with the team for Tuesday night’s game against the Kings in Sacramento. “Other than that, I’m ready to go.”

here's the link with the audio:

http://www.nba.com/lakers/news/09bynumi ... undup.html

Andrew Bynum told reporters after Monday’s practice that he will definitely play in the Lakers final two regular season games against Memphis and Utah, and that he feels great after another intense practice.

“Back this year,” joked Bynum after explaining that he went through the entire practice with his teammates.

According to Andrew the only thing limiting him at this point is his conditioning.

“I’m not all the way back to where I was, but I’m pretty close.”

rough transcript of the important part of the interview:

reporter: any idea, do you have any idea when you think...

ab: memphis, utah.

reporter: memphis/utah what u looking at?

ab: yup

reporter: no doubt?

ab: no doubt...back this year.

well good

and the memphis thing is a mental game, that he wants to beat
making it through that game will be a big confidence boost for him

that's my new theory anyway

LOS ANGELES Andrew Bynum is coming back, perhaps as soon as Thursday night against Denver.

Just as those “Banging with Mbenga” T-shirts were starting to take off, too. (It’s just as well, because it doesn’t take a wordsmith to realize those shirts should say: “Mbanging with Mbenga.” Maybe as a tribute, Bynum will go out there Thursday night with “MBYNUM” on his back.)

Just in watching Bynum do his thing in a pregame workout session with Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw on Sunday night, anyone would conclude that Bynum can do pretty much whatever he is needed. He is pain-free and if this were the postseason would undoubtedly be playing right now.

He’s fully capable of helping right now, too. Phil Jackson, hardly Pollyanna when it comes to this sort of thing, allowed that Bynum was “kind of the dominant force in there” in his 5-on-5 work at practice Saturday.

Bynum knows he’s basically ready to roll. You could see it in the big smile on his face Sunday. But Jackson wants a controlled atmosphere for Bynum to get off to a confidence-building start in his return. No way will he bring Bynum back first in a road game, and Jackson is even a little uneasy about whether Denver – the league’s No. 6 scoring team – plays too up-tempo a game for Bynum to be altogether comfortable Thursday night.

SACRAMENTO — I tried to gain some clarity on Andrew Bynum’s return date from Phil Jackson just now, and Jackson said he’ll discuss it with Bynum after Lakers practice Wednesday. A lot of media reports have Bynum not returning until Sunday night against Memphis based on his comments after practice Monday, but the decision still hinges on what Jackson sees from Bynum in this next practice.

If Bynum does return Thursday night against Denver, he would also play Friday night in Portland.

“He wouldn’t play that many minutes anyway,” Jackson said.

Although Bynum seemed to indicate that he wanted to play just the last two regular-season games, don’t expect he’ll lobby Jackson not to come back Thursday: Bynum and his camp have been pushing for a quicker return, whereas the Lakers are trying to be more conservative with their youngster.

finally.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4053471

Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum will return to action Thursday against the Denver Nuggets, according to a source close to the Lakers.

Bynum, the team's budding star at center, has missed the last 32 games after suffering a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee Jan. 31 at Memphis. The source said Lakers coach Phil Jackson telephoned Bynum on Tuesday night and told him he was going to be activated for Thursday's game.

Jackson has said recently that Bynum will probably start once he returns, a move that will likely send Lamar Odom back to the bench.

I wonder how long it'll be before he gets his wind? I'd hate to see Phil pulling him a few minutes into a stint because he's huffing and puffing upcourt. I want to see him sprinting upcourt for fastbreak dunks like usual.

from the earlier reports that his wind is terrible, it will probably be a while

contrary to popular belief the playmates don't do windsprints to keep in shape

anyway it will be great to have our beast back

Andrew's brother posts on another Laker board and said that he's going to start.

Looking forward to the big guy coming back! Andrew's to do list:

1- Rebound
2- Block Shots
3- Sprint hard on the break, post in front of the rim.

And to his teammates.. get him involved early! GET HIM THE BALL!

We need Andrew if we're going to win the Championship.
