2023 NBA Draft Discussion - Lakers Have Picks #17 and #40

Lakers own a first round pick #17 overall and a second round pick from the Pacers #40 overall.

Here's a mock draft to get you familiar with some of the names and ranges they're likely to go:

https://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/draft_simulator/view/1003030/

In our range at #17, we will be looking at a group of the following:

SG Jordan Hawkins
SF Jett Howard
C Dereck Lively
PF Noah Clowney
PG Jalen Hood-Schifino

Around #40, it's hard to tell but maybe they go after someone they've brought in for interviews or workouts like Ben Sheppard who is very similar to Austin Reaves. Would be a great player to run the second unit over time.

Remember, most 2nd round picks already have agreed to deals with these teams. This deal signals exactly that--The Lakers already have a deal in place with a player/agent for #40.

We must really like someone if we paid 4.35 mil to advance 7 spots in the second round.

Most of the times you can straight up buy a pick for that money.

Also, there were rumors we're indeed shopping #17 along with Beasley and/or Bamba for a starting caliber player. I'm not so sure we're keeping the pick afterall.

Although it's one or the other I think. We either get a starting caliber player for that pick and let go of Russell, or we're keeping the pick, let go of Beasley/Bamba and either resign Russell or sign and trade him for another piece.

I still can't see a way in which we do both things mentioned above. It would be just too much salary to be added if you include Reaves and Rui as well.

I don’t get it. what if the guy lakers want gets drafted 35? There’s nothing we or the player can do

Prince + filler for Kobe Bryant
To be honest the way Prince has played and with Kobes injury/age/mileage Im not sure I would do that deal either. Still Prince is more important and he wins the head to head battles with Kobe.

That’s a lotta cash to move up 7. We better not be cheap on resigning players like they were w Caruso if this is what we paid to move from 47 to 40

If we are so lucky to have Cason Wallace fall to us at 17 that would be the ideal scenario, if not him, then maybe bufkin, Hawkins, hood schefino or Smith jr (and at that point we maybe better off just trading down and getting extra picks)

In this draft, and even with our record of finding gems in the draft, I can't see 17 and 40 moving the needle much for us now or in the future...
That said, I'd rather draft than do a stupid trade...

I hope they don't trade the #17 for Jalen Suggs unless you are getting another first round pick in return (sort of trading down)

Awful pick. Should’ve traded it.

I mean... Jalen Hood-Schifino is gonna have to take a massive jump because he wasn't good in college at all. So um... yeeesh. Out of of what was available, I would have rather had Brice Sensabaugh who can actually score the ball.

I watched almost every IU game. He can’t shoot and he was wildly inconsistent. He doesn’t fill a need at all with this roster.

He had some bad games for sure and needs to get more consistent but he also had some really great games. 35 points at Purdue to take down a team that was #1 most of the year, in a very difficult environment (Mackey arena), in a huge rivalry game, as a true freshman. 14 of 24 from the field. Shows what he's capable of and also that he can be clutch in big moments.

Agree with wildly inconsistent but don't agree with can't shoot. He caught fire multiple times and had some great shooting games. 14 for 24 from the field at Purdue. 5 for 8 from 3PT at Iowa. 5 for 7 from 3PT against Northwestern. 6 for 9 from 3PT against Ohio State. The ability is there. He's shown he can do it. Including some really clutch moments and in tough environments on the road. Just needs to do it more consistently. I love the potential and hope the Lakers can develop him into a great player.

He had some games where he shot well but overall he had a 49.2% TS for the season. Not overly athletic or explosive either. He had very few dunks. He has good size but I’m not a fan of the pick.

I love the "Fino" pick. Great size at the guard position, great defensive instincts, high IQ player it seems. His FT% didn't look terrible at IU so there's potential he can improve his outside shooting.

This isn't a particularly great draft so I think this pick was the best upside.
