LeBron to Brooklyn: Would You Do It?

Post#1 » by ecuhus1981 » Tue May 7, 2024 4:25 am

Hello, Laker Nation. This Nets fan comes in peace.

I think that Brooklyn might be a particularly well positioned suitor, IF the Lakers chose to shop James. Since we owe HOU many of our future picks, we have incentive to be competitive. We're planning on a big FA pursuit in the summer of 2025, so a 1-year deal with King James wouldn't alter that plan. If anything, it could re-legitimize Brooklyn as a destination for stars.

Now, this trade pre-supposes that LAL and LeBron do not come to terms on an extension, AND that LBJ decides to opt into his deal, perhaps seeing the few options on the open market.

Would you do this deal?

Simmons/Thomas/Sharpe for James/Russell/Hayes

The Nets become a short-run upstart in the East.
Russell, Bridges, James, Johnson, [Claxton]
Schroeder, Whitehead, Wilson, Clowney, Hayes

The Lakers pivot away from LeBron entering his age-39 year, with younger pieces and future flexibility. Cam is a lethal scorer, while Day'Ron is an elite rebounder and post defender, giving AD a break from banging down low. Simmons is no Lebron clone, but if Ben can stay on the court, he gives you a point forward option a la Kyle Anderson.
Thomas, Reaves, Hachimura, Simmons, Davis
Vincent, Hood-Schifino, Lewis, Vanderbilt, Sharpe

Simply put, you want to keep all three of your best players and dump the useless ones for James without giving up picks?

Simmons is a pure liability at this point earning 40M seeing little court time providing little help on court. Cam thomas was not even a starter for the Nets.

You do not even want a sign and trade of Claxton while taking away Dlo as well?

Here's the deal: this team is nowhere near title contention. That rabble your offering does nothing for us. Could we make the trade?? Sure I guess. But I always pose this question: If YOU had Lebron....would you make that trade from us? Of course you wouldn't. So there's your answer.

The only thing your trade does is make us 500% less marketable

I can definitely appreciate the marketability aspect of this. That's something that no LBJ trade could fully address, and so LA may just bite the bullet and pay him.

To answer your question, though, the valuation of a 39yo All-NBA player on an expiring contract is... tricky. I think that, if the Nets were in the Lakers' position, that the expiring contract of Simmons, and 2 overachieving 22yo's is respectable.

Would you get a better offer? No offense, I don't think so. Keeper assets like future 1sts or recent lottery picks would be tough to extract from any of the other 28 teams IMO.

Would it be enough to lose a bankable HoFer? Tougher question.

My "plan" if you wanna call it that (let's be honest...we all know the Lakers are going to pay him, cause they lack the creativity, and the balls to do anything else) would be to sign and trade him to a place he was ok with. That way he gets his $$$. Now obviously we'd have to have the 3rd team in place...everyone finds a number they agree with...etc etc. So then we S&T for picks, and players coming back. Now...because this is all part of a rebuild (in my plan)....we can take some stinker contracts back. 2-3 year contracts wouldn't be the end of the world for us, since we'd be bottom feeding for a couple seasons anyhow.

So said team is getting 2 things: They are getting Lebron. AND we're taking bad contracts off their books. That would land us a couple FR-picks , I think...hopefully a second-rounder as well. <-------I would be immensely happy with a deal like that.

For Bron, based on last season’s stats combined with his jersey sales, he should net us quite a few picks AND a player like Ingram, DeRozan, Kuminga, Siakam, Mitchel, and so on… But I’d expect he stays.

Don’t think we’re having a LeBron fire sale just because he’s 39. What kind of junk offer is that? How many 29 year olds deliver like LeBron? The fact that he’s 39 will not deter any CEO / owner from signing him, trust me. I’m not a fan of LBJ, I’m a Laker fan. But that’s a stupid trade suggestion.

Hm let's see....

Simmons = Afraid to shoot the basketball, constant back injuries
Thomas = Undersized, doesn't play defense, hot and cold scorer
Sharpe = Have heard he has potential but is also an undersized big

Definitely not a convincing package for King James

In a NY minute... Every year he's here is another 2-3 before we can rebuild.

I get that nobody wants Simmons back for LeBron, but be realistic about what the return would actually be...
The reality is Jeanie is never going to entertain a LeBron trade, so these ideas are all just comedy anyway...
