I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do off the bench (granted he gets minutes from Phil). This new competition should keep Jordan motivated not to lose minutes to the new guy haha.

The Sun Yue block party

I've seen all of China's exhibition games this summer in preparation for the olympic. Sun Yue is by far the best defender and shot blocker on team China. The guy just has unbelievable timing on shot blocking especially in transition. Despite that however, i dont see how he can get regular minutes on this crowded Laker team. I think he is going to be a crowd favorite and the designated human victory cigar. He's exciting to watch but he isn't ready to contribute on an NBA championship squad quite yet.

He has 3 HUGE major weaknesses and until he fixes those, he is unlikely to receive any playing time. For one, the guy has no NBA 3 point range. He's a dreadful shooter. Undoubtely the worst shooter on China's national team.
Additionally, he also can't dribble nor finish with his right hand. If you think Lamar Odom's right hand is useless wait until you see Sun Yue.
Lastly, like many other Chinese basketball players, he is extremely passive. Unsefish to the extreme. He's one of those guys that would give up an open layup for a corner 3 to a teammate. He has no ability to score in the NBA whatsoever.

When he learns to shoot and stay confident he'll be a very good player. Give him 2 years.

That sounds exactly like Lamar Odom.

Just kidding. Kind of. Not really.

Sun Yue = Lamar's replacement. Unselfish, very skilled ballhandler and passer for his size. About an inch shorter but a lot quicker, more of a true guard, seems to have some special defensive qualities, especially anticipation and transition shot-blocking, which is really weird. Kind of a unique talent, seeing that he has so many of these transition shot-blocking highlights.

Not going to be the rebounder that Odom was, and rebounding was by far Odom's biggest and most consistent contribution.

That being said, considering that Odom would have to move back to SF anyways, and would see a decrease in rebounds due to 1) being more on the perimeter 2) competition from Bynum and Gasol for the boards, I'd say that the two players would contribute in similar ways.

Yue won't be a prolific scorer, but he doesn't have to be. He has to show some range, but we'll see soon enough. He won't be the only one who has to prove something - every small forward on our team has to prove they can help the team without being a liability.

I think Sun Yue has to play the pg position, and not pointforward like lamar. SUn Yue is 6'9 but i dont think right now he is strong enough to play some NBA SFs. I think when Sun Yue plays, he would be very effective at creating a serious mismatch at the PG position and help in facilitate the offense.

But yea Sun Yue is 6'9'', as in 69, he's ready to 'rape', figuratively ofcourse.

A lot of the criticism on Yue is similar to that of guys like Ariza, but obviously Yue is a way better playmaker and passer. If nothing else, Yue can be an extraordinary passer that just scores on hustle plays, which is definitely worthy of a roster spot in my opinion. We don't need him to do anything else we got Dfish and Farmar for now. But the prospect for Yue to become more than that is nice.

I liked what Yue did in the Yao Ming & Steve Nash Charity game:

Anyone else find it disturbing how in all the game footage posted in this thread (which are highlights mind you), there are just as many missed shots as there are made ones? 2 of each from what I saw.

Wait to see what this kid does against NBA athletes. Remember the international game is way different than the NBA game. I hope this can play but lets wait and see.....

you know the deal with youtube highlights...

The thing you can gather is:
a- he wants to play D
b- he's fast
c- he has coordination and is aggressive around the hole
d- he has court vision and passing finesse.

that's all good, but I'm sure sasha's euro footage would be the same minus the blocks and plus 3pt range. It's more than likely he needs a ton of minutes, coaching, and strength training. Still, a-d plus Sasha's story makes me want to give him all the opportunity be patient with him.

Is Yue going to play in the d league as well as spot duty for the Lakers like Farmar did his rookie year?

Is Sun Yue ready to contribute now? probably not, but he's not getting any better playing in the CBA or ABA leagues. I expect him to play in the NBDL and get plenty of bench minutes, and maybe in 2-3 years he'll be ready to contribute. Also Derek Fisher being on this team, who is another left handed player who worked and developed his jumper, I think will be a great plus for Sun Yue.

YES... i was worried I would have to change my screen name because people would ask who the hell is Yue.
Sasha Vujacic = The Phail Machine = The Ring Blocker

Trade Sasha before he ruins the Lakers next season.
