I believe the Hurricanes have already made it known to the Penguins that they will trade for him. He wants to play with Eric in Carolina, or at least Eric wants his brother to be there in Carolina. The two Staals, Jeff Skinner and Cam Ward would make a nice nucleus for Carolina. Would love to see it happen for my Canes.

Good trade for both teams. But as a Canes fan, I am smiling all night long! Hated to see Sutter go, but you have to give something to get a Jordan Staal. Penguins did fine in the deal.

Sutter is really overrated IMO, I think Carolina made out like bandits here.

Helluva deal for Carolina.

Not really. Sutter is basically going to do exactly what Staal was doing, at a cheaper price.

Not to mention this trade, paired with the Michalek trade, freed up enough cap space for Pittsburgh to chase Suter and Parise. Shero was seen 3-4 times last night talking to Poile about getting Suter's rights.

Ya you're right, exactly what Staal did. Minus 10-15 goals and 20-30 points and the fact that Sutter is locked as a third line center while Staal is capable of playing on a first line. Oh and the fact that they are the same age and Staal is 40lbs bigger and better defensively. You're right, pretty much the same player ;)

Canes grab Giuseppe at #38. Good value there. He could have gone in the 1st. Very nice.

He's is a little overrated but he's one of those players that every team wants. He's basically the perfect 3rd line center, he can hit, he can win draws, he's good on special teams and he can score some goals for you. Not a special talent but a special combo of talents.

I think if Pittsburgh drafts a Forsberg, Faska or Trouba type of player, the trades looks a lot closer. I'm not sold on Pouliot yet. I don't mind Sutter, but the trade boils down to what Staal does with Carolina. We all know what he's capable of, and if he can pull it together and reach his potential...Carolina wins it hands down.

Decent trade for Pittsburgh. I think they got relatively fair value for a player that had to be dealt.

Calgary trades for Wideman and then gives him 5 years/5.25 mil annual with a NTC

Holy sh*t lol. Someone needs to tell Calgary that the "mid 2000s Leafs model" didn't work

Calgary is in denial. It doesn't help that their farm system sucks.

Does Feaster hate Calgary that much? Not only does he beat them (screw them) for the Cup with Tampa Bay, he gets hired by them to make sure they never come that close again.

No matter how you look at it, Wideman was going to get 5 million anyways on the open market. He made what, 4.5 mil last year, and just hit UFA status. I agree he may not be worth it, but he was going to get it anyways.

The problem is, Calgary isn't close to contending and already has a few overpaid defensemen on that team that they needed to move first. Adding another huge contract that won't make as big of a difference as Feaster thinks is going to make it another painful season for Calgary.

It's not that he got it, it's who gave it to him.

Calgary was in the thick of things last year, struggled down the stretch and missed the playoffs. They could've very easily had L.A's spot in the playoffs. They have an aging Iginla and Kiprusoff, so they probably feel now's the time to make a final push into the playoffs. You guys are making it sound like they were at the bottom of the standings last year. I don't disagree that they're not contenders, but they improved a roster that narrowly missed the playoffs last season.

I just don't see what Fester sees in that team that makes him think that they can be a playoff team. Yes they have solid vets, but outside of that the team is razor thin.

I'm not disagreeing, I'm just saying I can see they're reasoning behind it. Is he worth it? No. He'll make a difference, certainly adds to their blueline, and he'll give them a boost on the powerplay.
