Draft Night Deal: Ivey/#5 for Markannen/#29

Post#1 » by Bentley1225 » Mon May 13, 2024 3:04 pm

Ill offer this idea for:
-The Pistons use their 2024 1st to land a legit young 4 in Markannen as the free agent options are not great for the position.
-The Jazz acquire a 2nd top 10 pick as they continue to play the long game for rebuild in WC as they could either flip Ivey or Sexton

To Detroit
-Lauri Markannen (1 year, $18 million)
-#29 pick

To Utah
-Jaden Ivey (2 years, $18 million plus Q.O.)
-#5 pick

Why?
-The Pistons decide to add a premier young 4 in Markannen to align with existing young core and to spend free agent money on a starting 2 and/or 3.

Cunningham/Sasser/FA?
FA?/Grimes/#53
FA?/Thompson/FA?
Markannen/FA?/#29
Duren/Stewart/FA?

-The Jazz hav3 2 top 10 picks in draft as they continue to play long game while getting a prospect/controllable PG in Ivey who they could slip or deal Sexton

Sexton/Ivey/FA?
Clarkson/George/#32
#5/Sensabaugh/FA?
Collins/Hendricks/FA?
Kessler/#10/FA?

I have Lauri worth so much more to a contender than to Detroit given how close to unrestricted free agency he is.

So, it depends what you think Lauri is worth, but I have this either an overpay by Detroit or an offer that would be beat by someone else.

It depends what Jazz want for LM in conjunction with using the recent Siakam deal (AS calibre 4 on an expiring deal) as a barometer. Im not sure how the Jazz would value Ivey and if they like a particular guy that would be available at #5. Ultimately, I think they are still rebuilding and not really looking to improve upon their 31 win season.

I think Pistons would be highly motivated to acquire Markannen Bird Rights and offer him a substantial deal in summer of 2025.

Pistons are not in a spot to be trading their top 5 pick for a guy hitting UFA in 1 year.

What are the rules for extending him if traded? Obviously the pistons would love to have him, but you have to be 99% sure he's not walking for nothing.

I don't think it's a fit for either team.

Nobody at 5 has Lauri's potential. The Jazz could probably trade up from #10 in this draft if that's what they want to do. They have a ton of future picks to make such a deal but honestly not sure there's anyone at 5-9 that's any better than what will be available at 10.

I also don't believe Ivey is the type of prospect the Jazz would be looking to add. He really doesn't fit with Keyonte or Sexton assuming they keep him longterm. If they deal Lauri it will likely be for picks in future, better drafts.

If Detroit can extend Lauri, it is the best possible use of our oodles of cap space, and we should jump at the deal

If Detroit cannot extend Lauri, it's throwing away a #5 pick

I don't value Ivey on our team at all and I don't have the 5th pick as an appealing centerpiece to a Lauri trsdr. Probably the wrong direction for the Pistons, too. I don't think Cade, Fontecchio, and Lauri can save that mess in a year.

If this is the price for Markannen, there are going to be more bidders eg. SAS and more

But I suspect that Ainge will want a LOT more

As a Pistons fan, I’d do it in a second. It’s so much harder to find competent PFs than SGs. I’m also assuming (don’t know the CBA details) that the Pistons could offer a larger extension than anyone else.

I’m thinking Utah would want more in return so not sure how likely this is.

I’d do it assuming we can extend him.

Thats an IF though.

Way too little value for Lauri especially with Ainge running things. Worth the gamble for Detroit though

We've got the cap to re-negotiate and extend him on a max.

But... Ivey is a suspect fit in Utah with Keyonte IMO. And with the draft being such a crapshoot at the top, I imagine Utah could find a deal that fits them better.

If the Jazz are inclined to move Lauri (which I doubt) I expect that there would be a multitude of proposals with better returns than this. That said, I wouldn't blame the Pistons for balking at this if they don't have complete confidence that they can extend or re-sign him.
I don't have faith in faith, I don't believe in belief
You can call me faithless.
But I still cling to hope and I believe in love
And that's faith enough for me.

I can’t see Utah doing this. If they wanted to move Lauri they could do better.
If Detroit changes the pick they give to 2025 or 2026 then it’s a more interesting convo.
