Trae Young moves

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about the possibility of Atlanta moving Young for picks and pieces (yes some of you called my silly for it, but it looks like it might have sprouted some legs recently.

Just looking over team needs, the best places for him to land are Spurs, Pelicans, Magic. I am sure there are others, but these make a good deal of sense given the need for a PG and having significant pieces (or picks) they can move to secure Young.

SPURS: Young for Johnson, Jones, filler, Atlanta's picks returned, plus SAS 24 and 28 FRPs. 24 FRP sits at #3 at the moment.

PELICANS: Young for Ingram, Jones, 24 & 25 FRP (currently #21)

MAGIC: Young for F. Wagner, Isaacs, Okeke, Howard, 24 & 25 FRP (current #16).

JAZZ: Sexton, Hendricks, best 2025 1st (CLE/MIN/UTA), best 2027 1st (CLE/LAL/MIN/UTA), best 2029 1st (CLE/MIN/UTA)

Franz and Paolo are definitely untouchable. Anything else could be an option.

I like Young to San Antonio for their picks back plus their first this year provided it isn't 1st or 2nd. I would love to see Young/Wemby for the next 10 years.

Orlando doesn't have much of a chance to beat competing offers. They really needed one of their rookies to show out this season. Murray could be a good trade target though. Maybe Black, an unprotected 2026 1st, and a 2nd 1st of some variety.

i agree their offer could be beat without one of them, i just dont see them willing to part with either.

It has to either be to the Spurs or have a really quality prospect going to the Spurs in exchange for a pick return. I can't see Young being moved without the return of the picks.

Orlando would offer Black (don't need him as a long-term starting PG if trading for one), salary filler and picks. If that's not enough they go elsewhere (I'm not that sure where Young's value really is).

Think the OP and first reply basically summed up the best options in terms of fit and assets (Spurs, Pels, Magic, Jazz).

SPURS: This would be a good haul for Atlanta, pick wise. I think they should ask for SAS 25 1st instead of 24, swing as ATL already has 2 24 1sts incoming this year.

PELICANS: this would depend on Ingram resigning with ATL. Also see above for the 24 pick. Try to swing a 27?

MAGIC: Wagner would not be traded. I think Black + an additional pick would be the counter. If I were Atlanta, Suggs + Black + Issac + 2 future 1sts (25+27) would be the target.

This is one isn’t talked about much, but I’d have Brooklyn making a really strong offer. Especially, since the Spida situation will have played out a bit.

Trae needs spacing and defense. And Brooklyn has plenty. Brooklyn can match with Ben or could go Cam+Dennis.. they own 5 firsts from other teams, some with really good potential.. they have Thomas, Sharpe, and can trade 2 of their own firsts..

Murray fits the current plan better though

best option for the Hawks would be to trade Trae to the Spurs and get their picks back and more, then trade Murray to one of the Pelicans/Magic for young players/picks and go into a full rebuild.

Brooklyn goes all in.

Cam Thomas
Ben Simmons expiring
Suns ‘25 1st
Suns ‘27
Suns ‘29
Mavs ‘29
76ers ‘27

Maybe more if needed.

That turns Brooklyn into Young/?/Bridges/Johnson/Claxton. A good offense, 2 good defensive players. I prefer to see Johnson as 6th man so woukd need a PF as well as a commitment to Claxton.
But it certainly has potential.

I don't see any other teams beating that offer. OKC could obviously, but I hate the fit for them.

DFS, Dennis, Sharpe, the two raw rookies.. still will have a nice big TPE if this is a draft night trade..

I'd like to see Atlanta tear it down.

Trae to San Antonio, 2024 TOR 1st, 2025 ATL 1st, 2025 CHI 1st (1-10, 1-8, 1-8, otherwise 2027 2nd), 2026 ATL/SAS swap extinguished, 2027 ATL 1st, filler to ATL

Murray + Hunter to Brooklyn, Simmons + 25 PHX 1st + 27 PHX 1st to ATL

(or similar to these, like the Trae to Brooklyn package, Murray to Utah makes some sense, etc.)

Look for deals for Capella and Bogdanovic

end with a core of:

Onyeka Okongwu
Jalen Johnson
???/AJ Griffin
???
Kobe Bufkin

+ 2024 ATL 1st + 2024 TOR 1st + 2024 SAC 1st
+ 2025 ATL 1st + 2025 CHI 1st + 2025 PHX 1st
+ 2026 ATL 1st
+ 2027 ATL 1st + 2027 PHX 1st

That should be enough assets/picks/young players to put together a really nice team. The should have been able to do so around Young, but they've given out way too much money to middling players.

I think Brooklyn and San Antonio have the best package (OKC makes no sense, the fit is terrible).
But the main target for Brooklyn is Mitchell. I would guess that the Spurs are bidding against themselves or some other team will overpay massively.
Dark horse: Boston offering Jaylen Brown for Young + fillers

Brooklyn could hypothetically trade for Young and still have enough space to sign Mitchell in 2025 if they move Johnson and limit Claxton’s extension.
