Depresses me that another team was able to get an absolute steal in a trade where they gave up little talent while the Heat haven't managed to do anything to turn this team around.

what does one thing have to do with another? I guess Mitch pwned 25 other teams too. Not the move for us to make this year. Great move for the Lakers.

Great move for the lakers, but I still don't think that they'll be better than the spurs, suns, pistons and celtics. Lot of talk of them going all the way this year, which i doubt will happen.

They just got max cap room for next year and will have a great draft pick of their own, and another first rounder as well as many tradeable young players to fill out other spots. Miller has a reasonable contract. We'd definately need to take Cardinal to even start a trade with them, and probably take Jason Collins too, but I don't think they are in firesale mode. Gasol just didn't fit that team anymore and they got a good deal out of it.
How?

With their roster after the trade, they can

$44,024,061 in salary next year. The cap will be $58 million. The Max is 1/4 of the cap, so is $14.5 million. So I guess they have $13.976 million - just under. With a top pick it will be closer to $11 million in cap space. I generally just consider 10+ million a year max space, but I guess it isn't quite.

I don't know how anyone can like the Suns over the Lakers. The Suns already had enough trouble because of the bigs in LA. Now they have to deal with Bynum, Gasol, and Odom? The Suns are toast.

Also, this trade sucks for the Grizz. An expiring and two real high firsts would have be easy to find any team. The only real unique piece they got was Critt, which really isn't much.

$13.976 - $11 = $2.976m

I doubt their two draft picks is worth only $2.967m, not even their own pick. IMO $9m is the most they can get with their cap space.

Do you really mean that or because . . . ?

All they wanted was expirings..i wouldve easily gave up Jwill and Cook and a future 1st rounder...does that work?

We had better assets than the Lakers, but the problem would've been the owner and the lux tax. Gasol is owed almost 50 million after this season so IDK if Micky would've liked that(for Gasol is worth it IMO)

Let's not forget that Navarro joined Memphis only because he could play with buddy Pau Gasol, so maybe he'll want out now? But considering the team situations it wouldn't be any different for him here.

Well he might be more of a need by our team, but eh. I don't like him as a point. As a shooting guard he's great though.

Well, Lakers gave capspace, javaris critton, and pau's brother marc gasol who is candidate for the mvp of euro league + picks.

if miami wanted pau they would have to give ricky davis + j will + future picks and i bet Riles wouldn't want to give up the picks and pay tax.

i think you should go after miller, but no need to give up cook.

offer to take on cardinal instead.

his contract expires with shaq's, so there's no cap space implications.\

he's a hard nosed player who can hit the 3 - solid back up for haslem who riley would like imo

and considering what the grizzlies traded gasol for IN confrence, i dont' see any reason to think they won't love to trade miller and cardinal for the cap space alone - not to mention help eliminate a lotter rival.

i think davis, smush, mournin'gs expiring deal gets you miller and cardinal.

Don't forget McKie was also part of the trade... He probably got a mill or three!

This is maybe the biggest "WTF?!?" moment I've ever had (learning of this trade), because to be honest, there was nothing about Mitch Kupchak's previous track record to suggest in any way, shape or form that he had the capacity to pull off a deal of this magnitude even if it was handed to him on a platter.

That said, this was a RIDICULOUS steal, not in the least because we're talking about Pau Gasol (ROY, All-Star, perennial 19/9/3 player with decent defense), but because of how spectacularly well he is suited to playing within L.A.'s triangle system because of his preference for mid-post play, his 15- to 18-foot jumper and his preference for attacking from the elbows and playing in the low post. He's about as close to the perfect complement to Kobe as you're going to find outside of a healthy < 33 year-old Shaq.

Any quotes from Kobe about the Gasol trade? I'm looking all over and can't find any.

He made a fairly public welcome to Gasol and said something encouraging about winning a championship; goto the Lakers' board, they have the link and what-not but the general notion is that he's thrilled out of his mind.

I don't know that the difference between Ricky Davis and Mike Miller is worth taking on Cardinal's contract. I'll do Davis for Miller straight up since it satisfies both team's needs.
