Kerb Hohl wrote:I feel like the last several years I've been much more disappointed in some releases than I ever have been...but man, I will probably be flamed by other Radiohead fans that must find every album as revolutionary - they've lost me.

After the first track, I would describe this album as basically 10 straight versions of the first 2 minutes of "How to Disappear Completely" except they decide to not give you the payoff at the end of the song. That might even be giving it too much credit. Jonny Greenwood is now a composer and creates cool violin arrangements...cool...can we get some real, actual songs with them?

EDIT: OK, ****. The finally recorded version of "True Love Waits" is kind of good.

I haven't bought the album yet, but am listening to Daydreaming and Burn the Witch a bunch this week. I totally agree with the assessment that they lack the payoff. The build up is certainly there that we are used to with various Radiohead songs (Pyramid Song, for example), but the huge orchestral finale is missing at the end. Even in Burn the Witch, it ends with the violin shrieking when I expect other instruments accompanying them, looping over the melody in the background. I think these two songs will be awesome live, and they'll further manipulate them and give audiences that pay off. I could see them opening their tour with Burn the Witch and closing with a long extended Daydreaming, which would be similar to various tours where they end with songs like Everything in its Right Place. The song has the potential to fool around with the various loops. But in its studio version, it ends with **** Thom Yorke snoring! Seriously...

Anyway, I'm a bit scared to buy the rest of the album. I think I will eventually, but the Itunes previews leave me wanting more.

I've warmed up to Junk, which I've just realised listening to it this morning after I'm pretty sure dreaming last night that Anthony said the album was a mistake.

Chance the Rapper drops new mixtape on Friday the 13th. Beyond hype. "Acid Rap" might be my favorite album of the decade.

RE: Radiohead

I'm on my third time through and for me it's definitely a nuanced album. My first thought was it felt like a Sigur Ros album but the more I listen it feels a little like a Radiohead soundtrack album. I'm guessing that's the Johnny Greenwood influence. His direction seems to be like a composer and he's evolving the sound in that direction (as already stated by Kerb Hohl). Without the crescendo standout songs (Let Down comes to mind) I tend to focus more on the mood of the album. This one, for me, begs listening when the feeling is introspective. Not my favorite album nor my least but I get the positive and negative feedback. It's all subjective anyway. I love how polarizing they can be. That's what makes them such an important band regardless of which side of the fence you're on.

Stand out so far for me are Ful Stop, Identikit, and True Love Waits.

Speaking of Radiohead, heard a cover of Creep on Spotify and while it was solid it reminded me of this one from four years ago and made me wonder why anyone else would ever sing that song again. Including Radiohead.

Thom Yorke agrees with you. They've only played it a handful of times in the last decade and not once on their last tour.

As to their new album, it's not mind blowing and doesn't have the highs/crescendo moments as Iheartfootball alluded to (Let Down is their best song ever btw). But I still think it's a good album and sits alongside Hail to the Thief, King of Limbs, and The Bends. The other 4 albums, OKC/Kid A/Amnesiac/In Rainbows are on another level. The Numbers is one of the best songs they've ever recorded - I love the jazzy/downtempo sound. It's reminiscent of their work on Amnesiac.

I really hope they do a From the Basement version of the album. I wasn't that enamored with The King of Limbs until watching FTB, which really made the songs pop.

This dude used to do stuff in Australia in the 90s, he would play with a full band but I caught him a couple of times where he was supporting indie bands on his own and he was pretty entertaining and it would just be him up there with a karaoke machine that he'd setup with his own arrangements/recordings of songs as swing.

Rolling Stone's 100 greatest hip hop songs. Should be the 100 greatest singles, but whatever.

I don't like the order of this list. I get it, Sugar Hill Gang and Grandmaster Flash were the first to do it. But if you honestly tell me any of their songs are in your rotation I will call you a liar. Those songs are garbage. They deserve a place on the list. Definitely. First of their kinds. But unlistenable in today's hip hop landscape.

1) Nuthin but a G thang
2) Juicy
3) Straight outta Compton
4) C.R.E.A.M
5) Fight the Power

That's my top 5.

These lists are always judged on the history and impact of the entries too. Who knows if half the songs would be on this list, or made, without that top 5. And yes I do have Apache in my playlist. :D

Let Down is definitely my favorite song ever.

I like a few of the tracks on this album. I agree that Greenwood has some major influence. That and Thom's divorce that has seemingly made him depressed. I've warmed up to calling it decent.

What annoys me though is the circle-jerk from critics because it's Radiohead. If you look on Metacritic, maybe not apples to apples as reviews were fewer and farther between back then, but Kid A is an 80. Amnesiac is a 75. OK Computer isn't on there but I think it got solid reviews. Of course, I am aware that all of those albums picked up some of their acclaim over time as they sunk into the music landscape.

Moon Shaped Pool is now an 89. Only one writer dared to give it a 6/10 "mixed" review out of the 30 so far. King of Limbs is rated as highly by critics as Kid A was. In Rainbows was fairly given an 88.

Anyways...critic response doesn't matter a ton...but it's pretty hilarious to watch the groupthink. I think this is a pretty good album but nobody dares to call the newest concept album from Radiohead "just OK." Meanwhile, look at someone like Coldplay, who I agree has gotten a bit worse over time getting a bit too "pop" but albums like Viva la Vida and Ghost Stories, which were decent, are universally slammed by critics for mid 60s/low 70s because Coldplay have sold out and all critics must fall in line. OK, rant over.

As for "Creep" - I have never liked it much. Covers of it are cool, though. I saw them during the Hail to the Thief tour when they refused to play it...got a big reaction from the crowd of course when I saw them during In Rainbows tour at Lollapalooza. It's kinda just "meh" to me. If anything, bringing out random songs from the Bends would be what I'd prefer.

You two are the first Radiohead fans that I know other than me and my wife that love that song. How does it not get more attention?
